Paypal shipping online insurance question.

When you buy insurance on a shipment thru paypal do you just throw it into the bin at the PO with all the other packages (I ship dozens of uninsured low value packages per trip) or do you have to stand in line and make sure they scan it as recieved? If they don't do a recieved scan, would your insurance you paid for be worthless? --jerry

good question, personally, I always put the packages in the APC drop box. I guess at some point you have to trust them. for anything of Excessive value (you make that determination yourself) Id just hand it to someone at the counter.... in 3 years Ive had ZERO problems (how's that for a jinx?)

I always stand in line and get a receipt.

I too have had no problems and insurance is generally not cost effective. But I'm selling some comissioned items where it makes sense. I know that many times my un-insured items do not get scanned on reciept, perhaps because I dump in such a large number of them at once. Buyers sometimes memo me that the USPS tracking still shows "The USPS was notified electronicly to expect the package..." days after it was shipped. Anything of high value I ship registered. --jerry

I just started using PayPal shipping, so I've only shipped around 150 packages so far. No problems, whether I take them to the post office, stick them in the blue box across the street, or give them to my carrier.

For insured items I always use the paypal multi-order shipping tool because you are able to print numerous packages and then print a scan form. When scanned by a USPS employee, all the packages and labels printed in the session will be shown as "accepted" on the USPS tracking site.

I just used the multi-order for the first time last night. Loved it! I could use it for packages that I didn't get paid through paypal on!
I have 2 packages going to forum members and will try it out now....I have insurance and I dropped the packages off at the local PO Annex (no payments accepted there but that is the hub for in/out packages so I basically cut out the middle man timewise).

I will see if they scan them correctly and the info gets updated or if they don't get updated and the packages get delivered first.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I ship and insure pretty often and I had the same question. When PayPal shipping first came out, I would REQUIRE the lady at the post office to scan my packages in so I could have a receipt. One day, she said she couldn't do that anymore and that the Post Master said she was not allowed to do it because it took too much time. I was very frustrated that they wouldn't give me anything to prove the item was dropped off.

So, I talked to the post master and I bluntly asked; So, what if I pay for a package and insure it for $500 but never drop it off and file a claim? He was very taken back by that and said with a frustrated face that it would be lying and that they would have to honor the insurance claim. I went on to explain to them that not allowing me to get a receipt was bad for business and they could be taken advantage of. He explained that once the label was printed it was pretty much like the post office accepting it. I could not believe in a million years that would be the case so I pressed on. "What if an employee steals it after I drop it off and it never gets scanned in". Same thing, he was getting a little pissed off by now. He said that they would have to honor the insurance. I left that day with him understanding that from a fraud prevention standpoint, they were totally stupid.

So, the bottom line as I understood it, once you print a label, you are covered. Maybe I shouldn't have replied because I bet there is at least one crook who reads these threads and just got an idea... Check with your postmaster to confirm before you buy into it though...
