Info on Hazy American Silver Eagles

MeltdownMeltdown Posts: 9,246 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was wondering about the American silver eagle series and how/why some dates seem to develop a haze over time. As I understand it, some dates are more apt to have it occur than others... In particular the 1996.
Also, Is it the same thing as the milk spots showing up on the 20th anniversary pieces. Does it affect the grade of the coin?

Thanks for any input you might have.

If it's actual haze, most of the time it's not an issue and can be dipped off, usually with MS70. However, if it's got the milk spots, there's nothing you can do for the coin.

The part about some years of proofs hazing more than other could have something to do in how the mint washed the planchets... but a lot of it also has to do with the enviornment the coins are stored in. I've seen 1986 ASEs that looked fresh as a daisy... and I've seen hazed over coins from as recently as 2003 and 2004...

Thanks. I was thinking the haze could be dipped off... I was afraid to try it though. I too have seen haziness on some coins and not on others of the same date.
