i LOVE the look of a nice circulated error.....it really begs the question of how did it circulate without being plucked from circulation by some curious person.....more than likely, "pocket piece" would be the answer

I've never seen such a dramatic broadstrike on an IHC before. Too bad I saw it AFTER it sold

It is worth $3000 in today's market, but in reality it is worth much, much more. One day these will be 5 figure pieces. I think it is the only 1809 off center half, but correct me if I am wrong.
Is it just weakly struck due to not being in the dies properly, or is that a bunch of wear on it? If wear, why would it have circulated that much? I guess 50 cents was worth enough that people could not afford to put it away and keep it.

I have been a collector for over mumbly-five years. I learn something new every day.

It's worn from circulation, and maybe being a pocket piece before it was tossed in a drawer?
Error collecting wasn't really a fad until the 1950's prior to that there misfits, oddities, fidos, and freaks where just tossed in the dealers junk box.

Russ Logan had several off-centers in his collection but no 1809. He did have a VF 1810 that went for 2600. On the other hand, here is an 1809 that went for 5 figures in his posthumus sale.
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.
The 1820 Airplanenut is selling doesn't appear to me to be double struck. The Overton 108 is a DDR with doubling on the lower leaves and denomination. It is a nice coin. Of course, I had already been outbid prior to your post.
Edit to add: Take my opinion for what it is worth. You have MUCH more experience with errors than me.

What's suprising to me, is that these would circulate as long as they did to wear down to the VG range. You would think while new, someone would've plucked them out of circulation just for the oddity of them.

Need a Barber Half with ANACS photo certificate. If you have one for sale please PM me. Current Ebay auctions

I'm with you on that 1820, as I looked at it till my eyes where poping out like Marty Feldman in Young Frankenstein just to give ANACS the benefit of doubt!

nice one!
any guesstimations on what this will bring?
Too many positive BST transactions with too many members to list.

I would guess $800-1,000 plus juice
EDIT: I assume it's not a rare date

Somewhat more than I can afford.
The coin sold on ebay about 4-5 months ago for a bit less then the low estimate mentioned by OffMetal.
I'd expect this to have a reserve of $1.5-1.7K?
It's a neat coin but VG wouldn't fit my set, I'd write the check for a nice original non dipped/cleaned AU+ though.
<< <i>DJCoinz, Thanks Commoncents05 did share this with me in late Feb.

Under $780 as I recall... which was a steal!
For an error this old and this dramatic, it is severely underpriced; I just wish I had more money so that I could bid on this!!!

Not sure... but doubt it?

Actually, it has been up on Teletrade at least once before and didn't sell. Last bid (owner's reserve) was $3100.00.
Edit to add: My max bid on it was 1250.
DLRC has sold 1 or 2 in the last few months in the $1700-1900 range.
CBH and Large Cent off centers and double strikes are not uber rare... guess the consignee if looking to retire on this?
Edit to add: My max bid on it was 1250.

I was going to go 1,000, but didn't even get a chance to bid.

One day could be next week with the reserves at the auction houses on errors in the last 6 months.

I don't recall seeing another 09... wonder if anyone is collecting these be date?

Most D/S CBH have a very close overlap between strikes, so it just looks like the profile doubled.
AirplaneNut has a slight off center, double struck CBH in his ebay auction right now.
Only by looking at the reverse can you actually see the second strike.
Edit to add: Take my opinion for what it is worth. You have MUCH more experience with errors than me.

I like all of the broadstruck images so far too.
1809 half bust error
I can't find her on teletrade completed auction for that date.
