ANACS & IHC's

Anybody have experience buying ANACS-graded Indian cents? Were the coins correctly graded? Thanks for sharing your opinions.

  • I have some old small holdered ones, and do believe they were correctly, perhaps even conservatively graded.
  • Tonedbuff, were those pre-barcode small holders?

I have seen a few in all holders. Many were correctly graded but with all services there are a bunch where you just have to scratch your head and go Huhh?

i.e., if you have to ask you need to spend more time looking at hundreds of example across several TPG's to determine if the coin is what you want. You should be able to tell within a grade or two to make an educated purchase, otherwise stick with PCGS and NGC.

edited: the best way to do this is going to local shows, checking many examples on the Heritage Archives and maybe getting a couple books like photograde and one of the ANA standards that explains each grade and how much wear is allowable at different points of the coin for that grade.

I collected XF-AU Indian Cents for years and had great experiences with ANACS. NGC is terrible, and I mean terrible at grading Indian Cents. I bought mostly raw and PCGS coins, but the one ANACS coin I crossed, an 1872 in EF45, crossed to PCGS at the same grade. It's true of all grading services, buy the coin and not the holder, but you should feel comfortable buying ANACS coins. Sometimes you can even get them at a discount over PCGS or NGC pieces.

Positive BST transactions with: too many names to list! 36 at last count.
  • does anacs still grade them well with the change in graders?

  • About 8-10 years ago I started my slabbed AU-BU set of IHCs in ANACS holders. I just liked 'em for their size - small coin, small holder. Found many very attractive coins, accurately graded, perhaps even conservatively graded. I sold off about half of this past year, mostly the common stuff. Many buyers thanked me and said they considered their purchase to me undergraded - got me some good ebay feedback!

Fair question, I think the jury is out until they grade enough coins. I would expect professional graders to do an good job. The distinction between RD, RB, and BN will be very important, though. The "old" ANACS (not the ANA slabs) were somewhat phobic about scratches, IMO.
