Is the new PCI going to have a fighting chance?

Is the new PCI going to have a fighting chance to catch up or contend with the two top dog TPGS's?

I have a feeling NGC had better watch out for the new kids on the block. NGC uses way too much FUZZY grading when it comes to the ultra modern PR/MS70 grades.

    So did the "old" PCI.
MS66 taste on an MS63 budget.

And at least with the 10th Anniversary Plats, so does PCGS.

To catch up or contend with? No, I don't think so. A snowball's chance in Death Valley, maybe.

Will they have a chance of pulling in a good market share of folks who submit less-expensive coins and problem coins? It depends. I think maybe so.

There ain't much room at the top, but in the second-tier market, I think there is some room.

They'll be lucky to get into the second tier, though.

no. The only hope for ANACS Igc and PCI is to merge and revamp there whole process. PCI has zero credibility in the market and will not survive as they are.

Given the turmoil at ANACS and ICG, I think they have a decent shot at ending up #3 in a couple years. They will need to persuade some decent graders to move to VA Beach, though.

They have to be prepared for a long battle if the want ot be accepted. It will be slow. They will have to be conservative and gain acceptance by word of mouth and from people cracking coins out and getting similar grades at the big 2.

I agree 110%. I'm in no hurry to use their services. I will stand aside and watch to see if they have the motivation and staying power to build their brand name over time with conservative accurate grading.

Of course, with all the love and support that exists in the numismatic community, PCI will quickly rise to the top. Combine that with the strong mentoring that David, Ron, and the gang at PCGS will provide and soon you will have a market leader.

Please note the symphony of sarcasm...

Back to reality...I would be stunned if PCI could turn around its reputation with numismatists...and that is really the market that will determine its ultimate fate as a "real" contender in third-party grading.

I'm still trying to understand why they don't change the name considering the stigma the name PCI carries.

Well if they do fail, then you can expect to pay a heck of a lot more to get your coins graded in the future.

The new owner of PCI has:

    1. A mailing list of people who were willing to submit to a company that was considered less than first tier throughout its long existence. Given a proper incentive, some of these people would likely submit again, especially if they had low value coins and can submit directly.

    2. The PCI holder is well designed and fits in either of the most commonly used storage boxes.

The new owner of PCI must:

    1. Gain acceptability on eBay. If they fail to do this they will not succeed.

    2. Gain acceptability in the marketplace, at least in regard to lower priced coins. The PCI name should probably be dropped. They should probably avoid taking on the "big two" TPGs and aim instead for a status similar to ANACS or ICG. The "big name" investment dealers are unlikely to support a new TPG since they have spent years telling their clients to buy coins slabbed by the "big two" only.

    3. Introduce their new brand of TPG only after having everything well thought out and ready to go. They must have a solid marketing plan in place and cause some excitement when they launch.

I hope they succeed. I think they can.

At this point, creating a new TPG (or "reborn" TPG) to compete effectively in the marketplace with PCGS and NGC is a lot like trying to seriously compete with eBay. It CAN be done, but it will take a lot of committed players with deep pockets and the willingness to sustain losses for a while, possibly putting MANY millions of dollars aside in order to do things to stand behind your product. These deep pockets might have to stand behind the services' coins and provide a sight-unseen market for coins at price levels on par with PCGS coins. And they have to be accepted on eBay -- I hate that this is true, but for now, it is.

Short of that, I think it will be very hard to succeed.

    Great points everyone, thanks.

I think the new PCI will suceed. I hope at least just below the level of the big two TPGSs, kind of like the old ANACS used to be. Competition is always good and forces all the companies to produce a better product.
David Lawerence stated on these boards that he has a lot of capital built up and has bought a new building with plans to grow. The boys at David Lawerence know bad grading from good grading and will do the right thing and have a pop report and a grading guarantee.....I would hope. If they do all the above, ebay should allow them to be listed on their auction site.
I would love to start submitting to the new PCI, but will not do so until the new PCI proves itself honorable and not just another crappy third world grading service.
  • I'd like to see the name change and/or label. DLRC already said they were revamping the slab and label so that is good. I think the boys at DLRC have there heads on their shoulders and have the tools to succeed. The one thing that a solid grading company has to have in order to attain creditability and market acceptance is top of the line graders. Does anyone know who their graders are. As mentioned before, when their slabs are cracked open and crossed over successfully to PCGS or NGC we will know that they have arrived. When that occurs with regularity more and more people will begin to keep the coin in the PCI slab.

    Good Luck to DLRC...
