I was perusing Heritage a few months ago and stumbled upon this interesting variety. While reading more about this particular die state discovered by Harry Bass, I decided to research recent transactions. Let me say this: the internet and Heritage are amazing tools. FYI, I do not own an 1846-D/D quarter eagle.
Findings:
*PCGS has graded 15 1846 D/D quarter eagles. Using Heritage and other tools, I was able to track down 13 of 15 PCGS coins and I discovered at least 3 in NGC holders.
*I made only 3 assumptions to account for all of the PCGS graded coins. (I am hoping to reduce this number soon).
*I was able to track the "hype" and pricing from the early 90s through today.
*I discovered one coin that was purchased, cracked out, sent to PCGS, received the same grade, and was reoffered, all in a matter of 3 months. The old cert was sent back to PCGS and removed from the database. This was interesting to me because it illustrated, in detail, a full crack out cycle.
*Harry Bass owned 5 1846 D/D quarter eagles.
*Breen estimated 2,360 D/D QEs were minted.
*This coin comes to market often given the small population.
*I estimate 20-25 such coins exist today. I found 18 through my research and 1 at LB.
I hope everyone found this as interesting as I did. I think I will work on the 1848 D/D half eagle next.
PS - If you own one, please shoot me a PM. Thanks.

I don't believe, on the whole, that this variety demands a premium. Coins with certain Pedigrees such as Eliasberg, Dukes Creek (the same coin), and Bass might sell for more. The D/D is a specialist’s coin so if you are type collector, paying a material premium might not make a good deal of sense.
The 1846 D/D HE has a PCGS pop of 98 while the 1848 D/D HE has a PCGS pop of 14.
Anyone else have any comments, suggestions, criticisms, etc.? Come on, this thread involves eBay (I saw the coin on eBay).
The 46-D/D half eagle is more common than the D variety. Trends values are reversed?
Incidentally a good friend (CL) and I (to a lesser extent) researched the full date 1855-D dollar and our results suggested approx. 35-40% of specimens are full date. This is consistent with our personal observations but, different from other published reports.
Dahlonega, would you say the census numbers are some what correct? NGC lists 163 '46 D quarter eagles and PCGS lists 149 (the PCGS numbers includes the D/D and the regular D). 20% of the sum of these 2 numbers gets me to about 62 coins.
