Local auction find. To slab or not ?

What do you think it might grade and would this be a candidate for submittal ? It will not make FBL designation if you see it in hand. There is interruption of the lines by way of a nick, so let's rule that possiblity out of this scenario right now.
Thought on grades and whether this is reasonable candidate for using one of my "so called" freebies image

Looks like a 64, not worth slabbing. IMHO
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • Here is mine. I bought it for $20.00 as "BU" at B&M and submitted it in January, 2007 as "freebie".

Nice coin, Tyler. I think the Mad One is right. After seeing yours , I'm less confident in anything over 64 with mine.

I could throw it in on my next order, that way you'll have an AU58!!!

They were tough. I thought it had a shot at 66. I was just happy to find one that had nice BL for a '53-S, not what I would call "Near Full Bell Lines', but nice. Yours is really nice as well, nice bell lines. I would consider slabbing any '53-S with good lines, even if it might come back 64. On yours, I think it would depend on those two marks on the neck (or time of day, etc.), but I think it could go 65 as well. Some people would not even consider 65 "worth it", but for me, I just really liked the coin.

Tyler, the marks on mine are really not that bad, in hand. What concerns me most are the luster breaks in the left obverse fields.

that is a nice coin and it wouldn't surprise me to see it come home in a 65 holder... In all fairness your photos are a bit larger and show the hits a little better but the coins appear to be pretty close .. JMO

Your choice to submit. You could probably buy one already slabbed and just keep this one as bullion or an album coin.
  • I agree with jfoot. I would expect yours to go 65. 90 plus percent certain on that. I just went and looked at mine & there's a little "tick" on the neck, about where that one very shallow looking mark is on yours. Also, the area near the bell crack on yours looks cleaner than mine. The fields on mine might be cleaner, but hard to gauge from these pics.

I agree Ben, I'm just going to keep it raw. It's got a good satiny look to it. It's also high enough grade to make the rest of them in my album look bad image
