1897-P Morgan -- TOUGH BEAST!

OK, I don't usually take up bandwidth with my ramblings, but this one is going to keep me up at night . .

The 1897-P Morgan (PCGS 63-64) is one tremendously tough coin to find!!!

I've had local dealers searching (well, maybe not in earnest, that is why they are 'local dealers') for months. I've scoured EVERY table at Long Beach TWICE. I've looked at 8 or 9 local shows (since the story at LB is "well, that coin is too common for me to carry xxxx miles").

I see 10-15 1893-S circs for every 1897 certified. In the literature, Bowers isn't impressed by them. Wayne Miller isn't impressed by them. NO ONE is impressed by the date, but try to find one. Either the stars are aligned against me or I've uncovered a mystery rivalling the 1964-D Peace. If you've got an 1897-P, regard it with reverence.

Not a solicitation . . . just an observation. I've advertised in the BST today; the first time I've ever posted over there. I'm just interested in other viewpoints. Several others from the Boards have agreed with me today . . . in the Morgan Set it is a killer to locate.

Not to worry . . I'll eventually find one, but similar to the guy in CoinWorld who was trying to hoard 1913-S Barber Dimes . . I think I'll grab every one of these I can. It is an unacknowledged BEAST!

  • I just sold off most of my Raw Morgans, but kept a few to send in to PCGS, this is one, am I missing something, or should this at least come back MS 63? Feedback welcome good or bad, I don't know a lot about Morgans, and bought pretty blind....

Doggonit . . . I knew this was going to happen. It looks now like these are so common I might find one in the street . . .

Barndog, I am not worthy (and thanks for the help). I think I'm going to slink back under a rock now.

But gee, they sure have seemed scarce to me. I think I need to get out more.

  • I see this date in MS65 more often than in 63 or 64...I think it should be considered a "better" date...with a comparable mintage figure to the 99-S.... although the current prices are not an indicator....Good luck in your search! image

LOL, don't feel bad, it seems like every time I go after the next 7070 target, they suddenly become very rare!

  • In DMPL these are certainly scarce!
