Type collecter questions....here I go again.

I've been collecting BU or slabbed coins across mostly modern denominations for the past year or so and enjoying filling in here and there...you know, but the repitition is starting to bore me. I don't want to collect so much of each series of moderns...So I'm wondering what the thoughts are on collecting types. For those who collect types, has the quality of your collection gone up? Is this a better route to go? Any insights are helpful. Thanks in advance.

  • I like type sets. You can focus on quality rather than on obscure dates. It is cool to have a high grade example of lots of different types of coins. It is easy to show non-collectors. They may rember seeing a Morgan dollar or a Buffalo nickel and you can present a very nice looking, common date example. It is a great way to learn about many different times and people in US history. Some people like to go deep, others wide.

I have a 7070 Dansco going and I'm just building a nice high quality widget set. My pockets aren't deep enough for high quality keys so the 1922 Peace, 1938D Buffs and 1958 red wheaties of the world are OK for my set. Otherwise I would be spending the rest of my life trying to build it and this is a set that I want done in less than three years.

<< <i>I completely agree with you and because I felt the same so I went another route. I have an eclectic type collection. A little of this, a little of that, for me all classic coinage in as high a grade as I can afford all toned and original surfaces (or as original as I hope I can detect). What I get out of it, is no system is dictating what I should collect, so it just what I enjoy, nothing forced upon me. The reason I tend to go with the hogh grades of what i collect is I enjoy the details and the color and the knowledge that it is original. I may have fewer coins than most, but they also might be of a higher and more dramatic look/quality. >>

Thanks! Must be similar personalities cuz what started for me as a somewhat focused collection has now become, as you noted, eclectic...lol. I've developed a taste for Classical designs for looking at the posts here and want to go in that direction. You don't use the 7070 Dansco though as BBN mentions. I suppose as one goes to types, one could always cheery pick the others...

We started to collect a type set because we are nearing the end of our seated dollar set and it may be months between appearances of coins that we need. We decided to do a key date/top pop set. This pretty much means, that the coin had to grab our attention big time and either be an absolute screamer (Top Pop) or an absolute rarity (key dates). We've only added about 10 coins so far but everyone of them is definately special. So to answer your question, yes the quality of our collection has gone up. Plus, it's fun to look at more than the same design or two over and over!
