Atta Boy Dave.........

<< <i>Some of you have asked me recently about the new CAC service which puts stickers of approval on already slabbed coins. Personally, I think it is a waste of money. The CAC stickerd coins I have examined are not especially choice, so I don't see the point. I have always advised customers to not crack coins out of slabs. Collectors often mistakenly believe they will only lose the grading fee and that coins can be sent in again with assurance the grades will be the same. Of course, it sometimes takes several tries to get a coin back to where it was and sometimes you can't get them graded again at all! The last couple of years, PCGS and NGC have gotten pickier about what coins they will grade. In the past, they often "net graded" coins that may have had minor problems like old faint cleaning, minor scratches, etc. They no longer do this. I was submitting coins at the PCGS booth when another dealer friend came by to pick up his show walk throughs which cost $100@. Of the 5 coins submitted which were breakouts, 4 were returned ungraded, the 5th a downgrade. Think you can do better than the pros? >>

And I have to agree with him here...

I would guess that old saying 'Ownership adds a point' would apply here quite a bit! I know I would like to think I have a good eye but the reality is I don't...and have the coins to prove it! Although I would think and hope most dealers and coins geeks (I don't mean that in a bad light at all...I wish I had more time to really get into the hobby!) would be more experienced and better at grading even if just a result of looking at large quantities of coins the reality is they are human and just like the TPG;s make mistakes. This, when included with the ownership issue could cloud a persons judgment at times I would think.
Have a great day!

I never crack them out, as what happened to Dave can happen to any of us.

Well if you were going to sell the coin and the CAC sticker would bring you a $$$ premium in the same way that a PGCS slab will bring a premium over raw in most cases [notice I DIDN'T say all] then you would be a fool not to. Unlike the TPGs, the CAC knows who submitted the coin do they not?
