1821 half coming up in winter ANA sale

After selling for a rather surprising $50K+ in the FUN sale this 1821 has been upgraded from MS66 (old NGC holder) to a SP67*. It will be interesting to see what it brings only 2 months after its last appearance. It appears that the new owner tracked down the pedigree quite thoroughly and convinced NGC this was not a proof-like mint state coin. I did view the half at the auction and it indeed appeared to be something other than just mint state. The upgrade and "star" was a nice plus for the owner as well.

Does a strike get any better than that?

what in the world do they do to get such colorful pics on the top shots?

i have a feeling in hand the coin looks like the slab shots.. which is
how i tend to like a proof coin to look.

any guesses on the hammer? i have no clue but i shall guess 60G.

NGC is cranking out "specimens" like they are going out of style.

So the suprising $50k sale price indicates at least two people figured it out before the auction. --jerry
  • The strike on that coin is spectacular!

Anyone else think this thread was about Contursi when they first saw the title? image
Want to buy an auction catalog for the William Hesslein Sale (December 2, 1926). Thanks to all those who have helped us obtain the others!!!

You have to angle the coin slightly to the lens to catch the light differently. It is really difficult to do. Anaconda is doing a competition with a proof Indian Cent that I had to do that, otherwise it is dark straight on.

Not a bad profit. NGC should certainly get a Christmas card.image
