NCS question

jmcu12jmcu12 Posts: 2,452 ✭✭✭
I am thinking of sending something into NCS for 'conserving' and I need to know what happens if they 'conserve' the piece and, as a result, it no longer qualifies for an NGC holder.

What is their policy?

I am willing to bet NCS can answer the question for you. They even have forums.

True, I am sure NCS can give me their answer. I am looking for an answer from those who might have experienced the same thing.

Sorry I should have given a better scenario, just in case it matters.

    Coin is NGC graded MS62

    Coin is conserved by NCS

Now, coin will no longer be accepted by NGC as original, i.e. body bagged.

  • Depends on how you sent it in. If you sent it to NCS in the NGC holder, and conservation results in a bodybag, you should be compensated for the coin not grading.

If you cracked it out and sent it in, it will return in a NCS slab.

If the above happens then the coin will be holdered in an NCS Holder with the problem noted i.e. UNC Details Bent.
  • Most likely scenario:

During the first ("Evaluation") phase, NCS will determine that conservation canNOT be accomplished without impairing the market value of the coin and return it to you status quo for a small fee for evaluating it.

If NCS determines that it CAN conserve the coin without impairing its ability to be holdered by NGC, they will contact you first (unless you've indicated that they should go ahead) for permission to conserve it. If you've so indicated on their form, they will then send it to NGC for subsequent grading.

Probabilities are approximately 99% first option, 1% second.

    Best of luck,

if you send it in in NGC slab - you can't lose
  • Buddy of mine sent in a 1953 NGC Proof 69Cam Jefferson for spot removal. A spot which seemed to be growing. He noted to not touch the coin if cleaning could result in a lower grade. NCS cleaned the coin, and it came back in an NGC Proof 65Cam. From what I understand, NCS is not obligated to replace the coin. However, in this case they replaced the coin for him. Not sure if this helps, but any info on NCS policy is good.

Make sure you send it in the NGC holder. NGC guarantee's the coin to not be counterfeit so if something is found after the fact they can compensate. Check with NCS to verify this scenario before sending if you are worried.
