Questionable slab - looks like air bubbles?

Has anyone seen PCGS slabs in this state before? Is this a 'normal' problem, or indicative of another problem?

Edit, just saw the new pictures....i have no clue whats going on???? Looks like the insert melted, look how it's draping over the coin.

  • I have these in hand, and it definitely looks like air pockets. At first I thought maybe it was an older holder (I'm relatively new to coins), but the cert# is newer relative to some other PCGS slabs I have.

My guess is that the slabs started to melt causing bubbles and distortions of the plastic.

They may have been heated after they were shipped from PCGS. I have seen in-hand some damaged slabs that went through the post office after the anthrax scare that were damaged from postal handling. Apparently, some packages that go through certain post offices are hit with heat or other forms of radiation and can damage the contents. These previously damaged slabs looked similar to the ones shown in the first post, though they definitely looked worse than the present slabs.

My guess is heat too. Maybe left on the dash of a car during summer after picking up from PCGS delivery?

Looks like heat or chemicals, smoething turned your insert to a partial liquid state for a short time; I have one that has cracks in the insert I think that was caused by heat.

Nah, the top of the coin is tilted back a bit, and since it was a scan it just looks that way.

Keep those coins off the dash board during those Arizona summers and those issues will be avoided.image

I have seen that when left in the sun these inserts do really wacky things.

Maybe ElmerFusterpuck is on the right track.

It definately looks heat related to me. It could have been an accident or maybe it was a deliberate attempt to AT the coin in the holder by exposure to heat. Those docs will try anything.

Yes, but is it Natural Distorted Plastic, or Artificial Distorted Plastic??

Seriously, looks like some heat was applied.

I think you may be right. And possibly PCGS was aware of this and quietly changed the insert to be less stable with the application of heat?

Looks like the slab melted and some of the liquid plastic poured on top of the coin. Hopefully PCGS and reholder it and not damage the coin.

looks like trapped water...............someone might have given it the "water test" to see if it was "air tight" image

  • Those pics are a compelling argument not to buy a slab sight-unseen!

hehe ya, it does - but it is indeed solid (ie, when you move the slab it doesn't move).

True...and if I paid more than $6 for it I might be upset. It was part of a batch of coins that I picked up, so no biggie.

My question is how did that coin gade at PR69DCAM? Looking like a 68 unless it's all the holders fault. Is that water or a melt or a photohop?
