Which Lincoln cent did NGC award the *star designation to? Slab shot 1st post pg.2!

66RB66RB Posts: 2,516 ✭✭✭
Here we have two Lincoln cents that are very similar in appearance. They are both graded the same(MS-65RB) but NGC gave the star designation to only one of them.

Note, one is an active eBay auction, the other closed on eBay recently. The reverses are pretty much identical in being untoned.

Which one did they give the star to, and why?

I like the bottom one more than the top, so I say NGC thought the same way.

The color on #1 appears wilder than #2, but to make a judgement based on color, I would have to see the coins in hand, it's possible the the pic is juiced. However, there are some hits on Lincoln, one on the cheek and one above the eyebrow that would preclude a 65 IMHO... #2 has a hit on the portrait as well, tho not as severe. I'd go with #2.

#2 because it looks more like a copper cent should.
#1 just looks wrong to me.

    just my guess.

Wow, determining how and why NGC awards a particular coin a star is a mystery to me and does not seem to have much rhyme or reason.

I would suspect that coin #1 got the star. Technically both coins are very similar. Both coins also have color and eye appeal. However, the eye appeal on Coin #1 is superior (in NGC's world) because the toning is more vibrant and electric than the more subdued (albeit attractive) coloration of Coin #2. What is interesting to me is that NGC disregards the plentiful "flecks of ebony tinting" on Coin #1.

Personally, If I had to choose between the two, I'd choose coin #2. Fields are clean, no significant ebony tinting and adequate/attractive color for my tastes.

    Great post!

I'd have to go with #2 as I find it far more attractive.

Maybe I'm nuts but #1 looks AT and #2 looks NT and much better. It's probably just the lighting making #1 appear much brighter than in person.
MS66 taste on an MS63 budget.

When NGC started to award Stars to dipped white coins, then untoned gold... the whole Star thing became a mystery.

If both where submitted today there a good chance they would both get stars?

I guess #2 because of all the spots in the fields of #1.

Well, it was coin#2 which they awarded the *star to. I don't know, but it sure seems arbitrary and confusing as to how they award their star designation, IMOimage

Because #1 was already bumped 1 pt as it is really a 64.

    2. One is too spotty.

I don't think either should have a star, but if one does I would say #2.

#2 has more eye appeal according to my subjective taste.

Coin #2. The why, I can't answer. I remember seeing #2 on the 'bay and thinking about bidding (in the end, I didn't). The reverse on #2 was had no color. I prefer my "*" coins to have color on both sides.

To me it actually looks like the same coin but photographed under different lighting conditions. Regardless it still has a nice look with the color.

I am in total agreement with cohodk on this one. Whatever that goo is covering the 'We' on coin #1, if it is, indeed on the coin itself and not on the holder, that grade was a gift. I have looked at that coin 5 times prior to writing this reply, and my eyes immediately go to that spot. If it is NOT on the coin, its still too 'flecky' for my taste. #2 maybe shouldnt even have a *....nice coin and color

I like #2 better than #1 it would seem NGC agrees. I don't think either one is quite star material.
