Mailing packages ...what are you guys paying?

I went a few rounds (being nice of course) this morning with the post master at my local post office (right outside Shippensburg PA) - I send out 1 PSA graded card wrapped with cardboard on both sides and in a plain 5" x 8" envelope (not a bubble one)... He charges me between $1.47 and $1.63 - the package is about 3.2 oz. - He went on further to explain, and my packages were 2.4 oz. etc that he still charges the same price...

I know I read on these boards previously that some are spending .97 cents and $1.17 - Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong? How am I spending .50 cents more than everyone else?

The postmaster told me my package is "rigid" (which is debatable) and not flexible - therefore he must charge me on this end or else postage due could be on the other end...

What do you think? Am I paying the right amountimage

Most of my single card postage costs have been between $1.14 and $1.47 each when using a 00 bubble envelope. When I use the Automated Postal Center it's cheaper (around $1.14) for some reason . . . maybe the scale is callobrated differently than the scales the postal workers use?
  • I send out all of my cards in a USPS priority box and sig. confirmation so I usually pay over 5.00

    I usually pay $1.47
  • One PSA card wrapped in bubble wrap inside a buble mailer is 1.47, two PSA cards packaged the same way is 1.63 or 1.83. Yes, it's getting more and more expensive.

If you made the venture into town it still costs $1.47 to mail a padded envelope up to 3 oz (some times a graded PSA card slides in at 2 oz..then it is $1.30)

  • Got one today with a $.75 stamp. Huh? Most are $1.47.

Those prices are correct for the First Class Parcel rate, which is First Class but for “rigid” packages that you don’t want going through the machines where they could get bent or in the case of a graded card, snapped--a little more expensive than regular First Class but definitely the way to go with cards. Packages have to be at least ¾” thick to qualify. So your PO guy was right on the money, so to speak. Hope this helps.

    First Class Parcel rates:
    Up to:
    1 oz - $1.13
    2 oz - $1.30
    3 oz - $1.47
    4 oz - $1.64
    5 oz - $1.81
    6 oz - $1.98
And so on up to 13 ounces for $3.35
  • I got tired of charging more on shipping to my buyers because of the goofballs at our post office. Not all postal workers are goofballs, but the one's here are.
So, I broke down and bought a digital scale pretty cheap. I print my labels via PayPal and everything seems to work out alright.
  • It depends on the PO I am charged between .80 and 1.13 to mail single ungraded cards it depends on the intepretation of the new rules by your local PO

  • I usually use a 4" x 7" bubble mailer for 1 psa graded card or up to 10 cards in semi rigid holders. With insurance up to $50, the cost is right at $3. If I use a 6" x 9", the cost goes up to about $3.15.

most of my one card graded packages are going for $1.30...sometimes higher but very seldom do I get away for less than the $1.30.

    al.
  • i lose money when i ship. i guess its my fault, because i will get the bubble mailer and then send it priority w/conf. when i charge $3.50 on ebay for shipping. i guess its better to spend alittle more than be the one charging $3.50 for an envelope. don
  • 1.47 for graded card in between 2 pieces of carboard.just sent a card ungraded to ontario, canada, post office charged 1.00 and i had to fill out customs form.thought it cost more than a buck, charged buyer 4.50 so i'm gonna give him a little credit or refund.gil
  • I'd use usps first class to mail a single card. priority is more and often first class and priority take the same amount of time getting to the destination. sometimes priority gets their one day before....not really worth the extra expense to send a single card.
  • " i lose money when i ship. i guess its my fault, because i will get the bubble mailer and then send it priority w/conf."

For small stuff (under 13 ounces), go first class.

I'm in a business (outside of cards) where I have shipped 100,000 packages over the last few years.

We've tracked the hell out of everything.

There are no time guarantees regardless of the service you select.

Go first class and save the money. I've seen them beat/equal Priority packages to destinations, and it's almost a certainty with stuff going to nearby states.

    -----

The only value of Priority is that you're getting the box/label for free, but when shipping a card in a 20-25 cent bubble mailer (Sam's Club), it still doesn't make up the difference vs first class.

    ---

If you, however, 'still' choose to go Priority, use their boxes. The Priority rate is the same for anything up to a pound, so the extra cardboard weight won't matter.

    ----

I REALLY miss the way it was a few years back, when Priority was $3 for anything up to 2 pounds, anywhere in the USA.....those days aren't coming back though, are they?
