I was excited to have the chance to photograph this "pattern" recently and compare it to the gold issue. Both coins are pretty cool and rare.
Gone but not forgotten: IGWT, Speedy, Bear, BigE, HokieFore, John Burns, Russ, TahoeDale, Dahlonega, Astrorat, Stewart Blay, Oldhoopster, Broadstruck, Ricko, Big Moose, Cardinal.

There is a problem with that? It is convenional wisdom people went to OSU because hey could not get into UofO, or you like sheep. FYI - to those that may not know there is a sheep farm adjacent to the OSU campus, because of this girls find it harder to get dates.

Lakes, how can you tell that the "pattern" isn't a counterfeit? With a little imagination, it kind of looks like there's some casting porosity in the fields, but maybe that's corrosion that one might expect from base metal (?) being buried in the ground. I can also imagine that it might have had some guilding at some point, which might also suggest that it's counterfeit. What do you see in hand, Lakes?
In all seriousness, the surfaces are very interesting in hand but they don't strike me as being counterfeit. The pattern is said to be R8 and if it's NOT actually unique, it would be great to be able to compare it with others. Do you know of others??
There was a gilt $5 in the same sale but I didn't get to see it. There is also a base metal $5 that has a different look altogether.
Do you have access to other Oregon patterns or know where thay can be found??

Now that you mention the ground, I seem to remember that when they were creating the dies they were really scrounging for metal and may have used some dug metal. God I wish I rembered where i read all this. It was an Oregon historical quarterly from 1906 or 07. I was not looking into the territorial coins so I did not pay too much attention to it.
Since it was such a pain in the arse to carve the dies by hand (Oregon in the 1840') there were only one of each created, hence the non fixed misspelling of .T.O -> O.T. Oregon Territory.
