    You could try this.

As a seller, though- you're not supposed to worry about undeserved feedback (at least, that's what a lot of people here say). Now, if you were a buyer, it would be a whole different story- you know how those scumbag sellers just love to screw people with bad feedback. image

Don't let the stress get you.

From your feedback any reasonable person can see you are good ebay seller.

I can't help with suggestions how to reverse this but I wish you good luck.

Thanks everyone, The buyer wil not even talk with me, he won 2 items, paid for 1 ,then paid for the other I forgot to combine the s/h fees, so I sent him a partial refund on the s/h fees and said if he was not happy let me know I would have sent him a full refund on the fees, he also said that the s/h was to high? I state in my ad the cost, so he knew before hand, the second item he won was a priority mail, I would have added the first item with the priority package , and send him the refund for the first item in the package. but the way he paid,I ended up shipping 2 packages, I also added insurance for free,. yet he still left that. I just do not understand people anymore lol. and the ASE's he won are all BU nice coins. I can still reply to his feedback ,but it is the whole idea. no reason and no communication?
oh well cant please everyone I guess. but it SUCKS to have that up there lol. I did file for a mutual withdraw hope it helps. Again thank you everyone for your help.MoJo

You can bend over backwards for some people and it just doesn't make a difference. I don't do a lot of selling on ebay but when I do I mail wth priority mail and insurance as well. Get it to customers in most cases within two days and what do you think I have for a rating on shipping time? 4.8 out of 5.0 ..... Go figure!

Your buyer is a twit! Too bad he had to land on your auctions though.

As for the shipping being too high? Gimme a break! Padded mailers ain't cheap and neither is ink or paper for your printer or your trip to the PO! Handling is supposed to be a part of the shipping charges and even though I've tried, I just can't seem to get my deliverables to package themselves up! You know? They just don't cooperate so I gotta get em out of there hiding places, make sure I'm packaging the right one up for the right buyer, weight it, print a shipping label making sure I add the proper insurance if it was requested or even if it wasn't and then make sure that it gets to the PO. All for some item that went for peanuts!

I think many buyers are still operating under the "online flea market" paradigm in which eBay sellers are all just regular people selling junk from around their house on a part-time basis and are glad to be rid of it at any price.

Clearly this is no longer true, but I think despite the take-over of eBay by full-time retail businesses, eBay itself continues to perpetuate the image of eBay being a different type of "fun" shopping environment rather than the retail model it has evolved into.

So, since eBay sellers are (in this now-extinct paradigm) just "regular people" and not full-time businesses, buyers do not expect that they will have to pay for shipping beyond the cost of postage (as too many expect that you'll take the time to scrounge for used and recycled shipping materials). Few will put up with paying for the "time" to pack something up and take it to the post office.

Even if shipping is high, people will still buy -- but since they instituted the "star" feedback feature a lot of people are using it and (I believe) using it in an appropriate manner. If a standard online retail business were to allow itself to be rated on its shipping charges, it would likely also get low ratings due to what are generally perceived to be inflated handling charges.

As for me, I can calculate the cost of postage for a package I receive even if it's printed with a label that does not include the postage amount. I know what the cost of insurance and delivery confirmation is. I know the full retail cost of packing supplies. I add them up. If the shipping charge is within a buck or so of what paid I give a "5" and if it's much more than a buck extra I give a "4" or lower. I don't feel I want to pay for your "time."

I recently gave someone a "2" because I was charged $25 on a $15 shipment that used boxes provided by the post office. And I still placed the high bid on the item knowing the shipping cost. However, I did not know that the seller was charging such a high handling cost until after I received the item. But I wouldn't give a negative or even a neutral in this situation, since I can rate the shipping charges separately, where I might have done so in the past.

I think the star system helps keep people honest, although I think a "4.5" rating should be a reasonable cutoff before it becomes punitive rather than the "4.8" that appears to be the cutoff under the new system. As mentioned elsewhere, some people never give a "5" under any circumstances.

And yes I realize this is rambling somewhat off topic from the OP's post but addresses issues raised by the post I quoted.

I agree, if nothing else he may be more willing to mutually withdrawal the feedback. I wouldn't consider this as extortion, since ebay asks you to rate the experience, and your experience with this buyer is negative even though you did everything you could on your side including a partial refund of shipping even though you shipped twice to make it right.

Can't do that if he left a positve feedback directly after recieving payment. As I have always said, it ain't over till its over. No feedback should be left by either party until the transaction is complete.... on both sides.

I am actually very sick of this topic but I will respond.

I have been preaching for years that the seller should not be able to leave feedback. Why? Because it simply becomes a contest of who can extort who into good feedback. The point of feedback is to give BUYERS and accurate view of the seller that they wish to do business with. Or - even looking at it from your point, it makes no difference - SELLERS being able to give other sellers an accurate view of buyers. EITHER WAY, when both parties are able to leave mutual feedback, you will NEVER, EVER, get an accurate picture of either party.

The OP had a great post (thank you) that really demonstrates the folly of the mutual feedback system in that he is worried about 1 stupid, worthless NEUTRAL feedback in his huge pool of over 3000 positives! And some of the posters recommended feedback extortion to help keep his spotless record (I did not pay them to do that but also, THANKS!).

Personally, I think that buyers deserve a better view of sellers than the other way around. It comes with selling that you are going to get screwed once in awhile. It still doesn't make it right, but it will happen. As I originally said, there are ways to mitigate that. And an undeserved feedback once in awhile will not sully an otherwise good record.

Can you see my point? Either do what ebay has done, or else do away with the feedback system altogether.

Very well thought out post slipgate. All I will add is that I see your point, but I see it from both sides. My post was because this happened:
The OP sold two items to buyer with under 20 feedbacks (at the time). The first one, the buyer left positive feedback, but a negative remark, which the OP had to respond to, and went above and beyond by refunding a partial shipping charge. The second item, the newbie buyer left a Neutral feedback with a postive comment. This is obviously a new ebayer who doesn't understand how the feedback system works. There is no reference that the Buyer "Contact your trading partner to try to resolve any issues before leaving neutral or negative Feedback." Which is off the ebay feedback page. There is evidence from the OP, whom I think we all believe, tried to contact his trading partner and they have not responded. I would have left a negative, or at least considered it, in this situation (at least under the rules as they are now). That is not extortion.
So, to sum up and not to write a million words this morning, as both a buyer and seller, this type of wreckless feedback by newbies (which is what I think this one comes down to), as well as the more nefarious types that WILL be coming from a small segment of buyers, are why sellers (including those like me who buy more than sell) are worried about this new policy. I totally agree that no system is going to be perfect, but ebay is not just giving us a ranking like a popularity contest, this DIRECTLY ties into how much you pay to sell on ebay, and how long ebay (through paypal) holds YOUR money.

You just got a newbie buyer who doesn't know any better. Simple as that. Maybe they weren't packaged "up to his specifications" or the thing with the shipping charge ticked him off. It's a shame. I hope eBay lets you do a mutual withdrawl.

His neutral to you will harm him in the long term. Boardmembers will see this post and block him from bidding, as I did.
As others have stated, the neutral won't harm you since you have a great reputation on ebay.

Can't please them all. Just to let you know that you are in good company I had a seller buy two items on the same day (actually same hour) and I shipped them together in one package. Both coin auctions were common date Walker rolls. He was IRATE that I took it apon myself to COMBINE the shipping. He wanted SEPARATE shipping so that if one got lost the other probably would not! He did not leave me feedback but I figured he'd leave a neg. Was lucky on my part! Oh, combined shipping saved him a bit over $5.

I'm trying to not to take your post as a criticizm.

I don't calculate a "handling charge" into my shipping costs which EBay certainly allows you to do but to ship simple coins I charge between $2.50 and $4.00 for shipping. I give discounts on multiple purchases of between $1.00 and $1.50 per item depending upon weight. On multiple purchases I choose the cheapest method of shipping for the buyer. Coins/Slabs are always mailed in Saf-T-Mailer's. I always print two packing slips. One for the buyer and one for my records. I always print labels on adhesive stock for my convenience and a profession look to the packages. I pay the insurance if I cannot cover the item myself (self insurance) and if the buyer has not purchased it. My coverage comes in terms of either replacement items or refunds.

For rolls of Eisenhower's, I only ship priority mail in a box with bubble wrap padding and shipping peanuts for $7.50. I use shipping peanuts because they are an ounce lighter than newspaper for Priority Mail boxes. Maximum shipping is $12.00 for Priority Mail flat rate. I use Priority Mail because the boxes are free and the shipping is faster which is what the customer wants.

It costs me approximately $1.00 in supplies just to package a simple coin for 1st Class Postage.

I accept PayPal which takes an additional 2.9% of my shipping costs including postage ($.12 for $4.00).

I use PayPal to generate my shipping labels which incurs an additional $.18 cents for Delivery Confirmation of which I have no control over.

For a $4.00 shipping charge to the buyer it costs me anywhere from $1.99 to $3.64 in 1st Class postage (which does not include my supplies) depending upon insurance and if the item is less than $50. California to Nevada is one thing while California to Maine is completely different for Parcel Post which is required for items over 13 oz. Insurance is relative to the otem purchased and ranges from $1.65 (paypal takes .05) to $7.30 (Paypal takes .21) for items over $500.

Lastly but certainly not the least, I pay $16 per month for an eBay Store whether I sell from it or not. eBay gives me a discount on listing fee's but charges a flat 10% FVF. Come 2/20, that jumps to 12%. I mention these costs because they all apply to the bottom line.

I telecommute from home and therefore do not "drive" by a Post Office on my way to work. The nearest Post Office is 6 miles one way.

I've had over 300 EBay sales and carry a 4.8 on my Shipping and Handling DSR so 96% of my EBay customers don't think my charges are out of line.

For the OP, his shipping of $3.00 for the 2's and $3.50 for the Silver Eagles was either a losing transaction or a break-even deal. In this particular case, the seller did lose money since two separate packages were mailed and a "refund" was given. For the Buyer to suggest that the actual shipping charge didn't match the amount he paid in the auction is rediculous as the shipping costs in the auction do not say "upto" or even "could be as much as" or anything along those lines. The amount posted is a flat shipping charge regardless of what the "true" costs might be and regardless or where the buyer might live. For him to leave a negative/positive is just unrealistic as "shipping" costs also have "hidden" costs which the buyer never see's.

Well, Lyds, you've got that worked out really well and I'm sure it works well for you which is what matters. I'm also sure I don't sell as much as you, so for me to figure all that out would actually cost me more in man hours than just charging a buck and a half to ship and living with Paypal taking 12 cents of my shipping fee.

In a way, maybe the new changes to feedback will be a good thing since there's little reason to obsess over a 100% feedback rating any more.

And I absolutely think negging this person is the wrong thing to do here, especially if the goal is mutual retraction. That's precisely the reason why sellers are being stripped of their ability to neg buyers to begin with.
  • Options
Ziggy, I mean no offense, but exactly why does the OP, the seller, deserve a crappy remark on one positive feedback, and a neutral mark on another? What did the OP do to deserve that? And if nothing, why should they NOT give appropriate feedback regarding how they thought the transaction went from their perspective, which is what the current feedback system is suppose to be about. Sure the buyer paid on time, but not responding to the seller before leaving feedback, or after, and for leaving crappy feedback when they are wrong, I am sorry, I disagree. The buyer deserves a negative as a crappy ebayer. It's a moot point anyway, the OP evidently left feedback upon reciept of payment, again, did nothing wrong.
I guess this is why forums are fun, differences of opinion.

Why, this whole thread is about what is an appropriate feedback. There is or was a negative for a reason.

Reporting policy violations will become increasingly important under eBay's new feedback system since sellers can no longer take negative action on their own. If a buyer/seller is a victim of any circumstances which violates eBay policy, they must be reported to trust & safety so they can be documented and appropriate action taken. eBay has stated they are very commited in this are of accountability for both buyers and sellers as it is critical to restoring confidence to the marketplace. eBay will be announcing shortly these added accountability mesures and options

Becoka-I am not referencing any specific reply or the OP however I am just making my comment in regards to the overall disparity that ebay has chosen to represent in the overall buying/selling experience. I have my own opinion to the OPs dilemma however I will choose to keep that to myself in order to avoid a barrage of ridicule which undoubtedly would follow. I just expressed my choice and further elaborated that this controversy further added to the reasons as to why I made a choice.
