Cannot Bid on an Ebay Item when PayPal is required by Seller.

jmski52jmski52 Posts: 23,962 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have no interest in setting up a PayPal account, because I would never use it. I consider it unnecessary. Now, I have a seller who is willing to take a cashier's check, but he's got PayPal as a requirement in his listing, and ebay won't accept my bid.

Can he change his listing to remove the PayPal requirement after the auction has begun?

Sure he can. We can even end it or change it to a BIN or whatever he wants.

Does it cost the seller a fee to change listings?

The fees shouldn't change unless he adds something fee-based to the listing. Changing his accepted forms of payment won't matter. He can also add Jmski's eBay ID to a list of bidders to whom the bidding restrictions do not apply. I've done that once or twice.

Positive BST transactions with: too many names to list! 36 at last count.

You may actually consider setting up a paypal account anyway, I have a feeling more and more sellers are going to go to paypal only/and or paypal required in a few months when these changes take effect. JMO.

    Yep. I'm considering it myself.

Well, on the surface then, excellent business move by Ebay.
They "lower" the fees, which, for many, means an increase. Cha-ching #1
Then, if that convinces many people to switch to Paypal for "paypal only" listings, Cha-ching #2

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I doesn't hurt and it certainly helps. I've had my account for 7 years and have had very few problems. They've even helped me get refunds from sellers who sell fake or broken items that don't want to give you a refund. I don't like the fees but I also don't lke hauling myself down to the bank to deposit some $15 check and then hope it clears while fending off "Has it shipped yet" emails. Sanity certainly has a price. IMO

Not PayPal only. PayPal account required. Buyers can still pay by check or money order.

No, Russ. Not if the buyer has a "PayPal-required" stipulation. I tried to enter a bid, and ebay kicked it right back to me. This was after I emailed the seller to see if he would accept a cashier's check or money order, and he said "yes".

They want a lock on all sides of the transaction.

If you had a PayPal account, you could still pay by mail.

    Selecting Buyer Requirements

Requiring buyers to have a PayPal account does not mean that the buyer must pay for the item using PayPal. It only requires that the buyer be a PayPal account holder before they can bid on or purchase the item through whichever payment method you accept.

Just set up a paypal account. It only takes 2 minutes and you're not required to enter a CC or bank account just to get registered.

DJ, I'm suprised......no ID verification at all? That blows away my whole reason, which would be an added security level in buyer identification, regardless of how they pay. I'm shocked you can join paypal without any ID required....

I was very surprised myself when my paypal account was set up several years ago...but that's the way it is.

I'd rather eat nails. I told the prospective seller that I would have to "no bid" that auction. Regards, Jerry

I Have recently Gone To Paypal Only with Immiediate Payment Required, just in case the Bidder does'nt check out right away the item can still be sold. If a potential Buyer writes me about an Item wanting to use another payment method, i have the Choice to evaluate the potential buyer and Revise the Listing accordingly. I Had more "Bidders" this year then ever before that never became "Buyers",soo i changed To Immediate Paypal Required. Ray in Florida..
