Not suprised, he knows what his worth is in todays market. If the Mets lineup produces runs for him he could win close to 30 games IMO

21.5? he could have gotten more. per year, if he signed for 4 years instead of 6.

Thats a steal compared to the $120 Mill that Zito got

What sucks about this is that Josh Beckett will probably start whining.

Great deal for both parties. Mets gave up the extra year Johan wanted, and Johan agreed to take a bit less than the $25 mil per he was looking for...This is the deal of the offseason!

    Let's GO METS!!

$25 mil was a pipedream. I thought he would get 20 max per year for a 6 year extension.

20 mil, 21 mil, 25 mil, is there really any noteworthy difference there, for a NY team with a brand new cable station and a new stadium on the way? If he pitches the way he's capable of, he'll be worth every penny!! And our payroll will still be about 80 mil less than the Yankees, LOL!

I was going to say the same thing, great price, makes the Zito deal look like the biggest joke in baseball (and what are the Giants going to have to pay their "real" pitchers Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum in 5 years when they are still paying Zito 18)???
Good job Mets, as a former Expos fan I can't believe I'm actually rooting for them to win the division this year!

The Mets owners are chumps. I predict this guy is gonna be a flop this season. Yes, he'll win some games, but the Mets still won't win the NL East.

Yes, the ole' mighty dollar rears it's ugly head again.

I have one question, how much is enough?

    Sorry, just my humble opinion.

Numbers and stats don't lie, Santana will be great any where he plays.

Yes, no question these athletes are obscenely overpaid (relatively speaking), but that's the state of the game, otherwise, why bother watching at all? Bottom line is if the market will bear it, why not get the best deal possible (from a player's standpoint, of course). I read in the paper this week that Judge Judy signed an extension for her program and will be receiving a raise over the $25 million a year (A-Rod money) she was previously receiving, so how much is enough, indeed?

Exactly Grote, how about Kelsey Gramer getting paid nearly 2 million an episode for his show as well? As well, many of the top movie stars are able to do 2 movies a year (or 3 in 2 years), and they get paid 15 to 20 million a picture, MORE than atheletes.
It will be interesting now to see how much Big Daddy Sabathia gets as he's a free agent after this seaon. It looks like the ceiling will be somewhere in the 20 million dollar range for the top 10 or so pitchers. Problem is, unfortunately, Zito in my mind has turned the same corner Black Jack McDowell turned and I believe he'll be about as successful--so his contract will have to be surpassed by every decent pitcher with 5 or 6 good years under his belt. If you want to blame anyone, blame the Giants, what a BRUTAL signing.

I believe the worst contract MLB is Juan Pierre's. Zito's is certainly in the running.

Well, we'll see if Mets fans are image come September.

I have a feeling that Mets fans will be image come September, just like last season. Ha!

Eh, I'm fine with it. The only downside is that is puts the market for stud pitchers at insane prices, which pretty much guarantees that mid to small market teams will not be able to hold onto their studs.

As a Phils fan, I'm afraid this signing probably means the Mets get the NL East title this year. But how many years have we heard the same story about how good the Mets look on paper...if they don't win it in 2008 with Santana, it will be as big a disaster as last September's collapse.

Santana is going to be great for the Mets. It's only as question of how long. Cleveland did a nice job against him last year, the rest of the AL did not. He'll win 20 two or three times over this contract. I'd put him on 100 wins over the six seasons.
