What are your opinions on this 1809 CBH- Grade in!!!!

Don't have my Overton book handy, but it might be O-103, off the top of my head, due to the notched star 13 obverse and the titlted "T" in STATES. It's a cleaned piece with a few rim nicks that retoned nicely, possibly in an album. VF25 detail, but I doubt PCGS will holder it due to the cleaning. I love the 1809 halves, one fof the most interesting years in the Capped Bust series, with numerous R4 and R5 varieties, and three different edge designs.

Edited: to change O-113 to O-103! O-113 is very scarce, whereas O-103 is the common one I was thinking of.

Definitely a Cleaned and AT (possibly album toned) coin.

Overall the grade is about 30 details.

Yikes, I can't believe those are the same coins! Based on the scan I would have said most likely original, but the pics really make it look terrible IMHO. I'm sorry, but the cleaning really looks harsh.

Incidentally, regarding the "harsh" cleaning. It isn't nearly as bad as it seems. When I originally bought it (a year or so prior to trading it to Earl in a forum swap) it was encased in an ANACS holder as VF-30 details--rim damage with no mention of the cleaning.

I would have to agree....I used a lot (read: LOT 3 OTT worth) of light to bring the colors out and maintain the definitions on the coin. Looking at it under 60x there is some slight cabinet friction, but no cleaning other than maybe a real early dip. You should have seen the pics when I used a lighter background + 3 OTT lights.....looked almost chromed!!

Here is a prime example where scans and photos complement each other. If I had to choose one, I'd probably go with the scan. While it does not look like original skin, I strongly suspect that she looks much better in hand that in the pics. Funny how some coins just aren't photogenic.

Rim bumps are minimal and am kinda surprised ANACS felt a notation was warranted.

How can it be "pre-slab CAC'd"??? How would The CAC know whether or not they agree with the TPG's opinion or assigned grade? Wouldn't the sticker "alter" the surface without the protective plastic barrier?

I just opened this thread, saw the coin, and said, "I see some luster in the protected areas, nice eye appeal....I would say VF35." Nice coin.

That is some amazing variation among the three sets of photos -

I disliked it in the OP's photos (no offense), thought it was original but uninspiring in the scanned images and I like it very much in the TrueView.

The TrueView is very close to true in this case. The colors really pop in hand, but I have never been able to get color in my scans.

Edit to add: well, color other than brown.

Doogy.....what are you talking about? This coin was raw when taken into Long beach and received an unsoliciated thumbs up....this had NOTHING to do with NGC....where did you come up with that from?

Yousa!!! Sure looks nice in the PCGS pics!! I guess the coin is photogenic after all.

How I wish I could produce comparable images for some of mine.....
