Jefferson 1946S FS-031.5 - hockey stick?
I have only examined two of these varieties and both had the hockey stick.
For comparison purposes here is a non variety 1946S.

Here is the FS-031.5 variety. Check out the ponytail.

Do all the FS-031.5 have the "hockey stick"?

Wow - there are less than 12 - 15 certified by the big 3. I will be submitting mine to PCGS shortly - probably a MS63 - currently in an ANACS MS64.

Oh, and by the way, if there are any of you Jefferson collectors that have not see Frank's collection, you should take a moment and check them out. Many pop top coins that will probably never be improved upon. Also, his coins are either nice or extremely nice for the grade.

damaged the die, came out or was removed, and then continued to strike planchets until it was noticed. That is my opinion, let's here some other Jeff enthusiasts opinions! Always willing to learn. Shag
How bout it bigdowgie, got an opinion?
Just my 2 cents, all I know is that it is a very rare variety.

I would have guessed the hockey stick is a "struck through wire" (defintion from Coneca)
This coin exhibits an incused thin line from a piece of wire or bristle from a wire brush that came between it and the die. A standard piece of equipment in a machine shop is a wire brush or file card that is used to clean the grooves of a file. The pressman periodically uses the brush to clean the press and the dies when they become clogged with grease and dirt. Falling bristles can find their way into the coining chamber and be struck into a coin. These often appear in a U shape and have been incorrectly called “staples.”
I would defer to an error expert.

The 2nd coin I examined was the one at the FUN show. It had the same hockey stick and I pointed it out to the dealer. That coin was in an ANACS holder MS65FS would probably grade MS64 in my opinion.

I've had a few (Ngc 64,65,66) and they have all had the "hockey stick". By the way Frank, do you have the FS-025 1942 Jefferson? I've seen a few of the FS-026, but not many of the FS-025 variety.
I have a raw FS-026 but still looking for a FS-025 - have any for sale?

Always good seeing you, sorry took so long to reply! My opinion of the 1946-S FS31.5 is........I wish I had one! I've been looking hard, but obviously no luck thus far, not even circulated. This wire in the hair seems to be a recent observation. I did find the PCGS# for this variety, it's 38509. Currently, PCGS lists 2-45's, 1-64 and 1-65. One of these days, I'm going to add another to this Pop Report!
