Scammed on eBay

I got scammed on a raw gold buffalo from a 99% feedback, 74 transaction, 4 year member on eBay. Paypal refunded $200 but I am still out several $. He has since been kicked off eBay and he will not respond to any e-mails. Paypal will not offer any more help. Has anyone had any luck or have any information how to go about getting money back. He lives in Oregon and I am on the east coast.

  • His eBay name was FANDFCS for Fast and friendly computers
  • If the seller had 99% over 74 feedbacks, the transaction should have been covered up to $2,000 in PayPal Buyer Protection. If a seller has less than 50 feedbacks or less than a 98% positive rating, the transaction is covered up to $200.

  • I'm sorry to hear this. That just came up yesterday. I think the suggestion was to use a credit card for larger purchases. Credit card companies will do a chargeback for the full amount. Am I correct guys?.

  • I believe your only real chance of recourse will be with paypal. When I was scammed, I went to the police as directed by papal to file a report and my local police wouldn't even take a report. There is a major question about exactly where the crime took place and who has jurisdiction. The stand taken by my local police was that with interent crimes, unless both parties were local, they had no jurisdiction. I hounded paypal for months until they settled with me just to get me to go away. Good Luck to you.

  • Go to his house with the Sheriff's department.

Get on the phone with your credit card company. They may refund your money.
  • You should be suspicious on sellers like this, it looks like a hijacked account because of no activity in quite a while, and you can't tell what they sold before because their last listings were so long ago. On expensive items like this, I would NOT do a buy it now for a buyer with this history, even if it was good at the time percentage wise, for more than you are protected for by ebay. If you paid by credit card through paypal, contact your credit card company and have them stop payment for you.

edited to add: its called a chargeback, not a stop payment through the credit card company, and they should be able to do this, also, do what the others have stated and start a fraud investigation with your local police department, that will help you in case the credit card company wants some paperwork.

If you used a credit card for your Paypal, dispute the charge with your CC company.

It appears that, unfortunately, the seller got a neg that put him below 98% right about the time the OP BINed the coin.

    Skeeter,

You didn't think something was up when you were BINing the coin for only $750?

  • He had 99% feedback when I bought one........while I was waiting I noticed he had been left neg feedback and I contacted that member and he got the full amount back because the seller had money in his paypal account. He had 4 more buffalo's listed after I bought one that all sold in a short period of time.

When you get your statement file an item not recieved through your credit card company. Keep the $200.00 and use it to stimulate the economy. OR put the $200.00 into your favorite cherity. image

The seller was a scammer and the auctions were fraudulent.

I had a similar situation recently where both my local police and the out of state police would not act. Spoofbay was entirely useless and even has the seller still up and alive. I finally went to the police where my PO Box is located (thank heavens I did my mail in a town where there is still some common sense). They were happy to take down a report and forward it to the out of staters. Hopefully this will get some action taken. The USPS could care less about internet fraud as well. In the old days your local postmasters would actually help you out. Now they have you file on line complaints at the Internet Fraud Site. There your complaint gets lost among thousands others where you are assured of nothing ever being done. Stick with the police.

I saw these auctions as soon as they were listed and I couldn't get away from them quickly enough; they just really looked like someone would get scammed. It's too bad it appears to have happened.

  • i may read some threads hear in disgust when talking about scammers, but man with out it guys like me and others would be ripped all the time.

Thank you everyone that has posted a scam and/or a scammer. It is making a difference.
  • I would dispute the fact that when you PAID for it he had 99% feedback. So you should be covered under paypal... It was a buy it now, you cant know he wouldnt send it to you. Follow up with paypal again...They should protect you.
    Good Luck

How do "hijacked" accounts happen ?..Does ebay have any safeguards to prevent this sort of nonsense?
It seems odd.... some sellers get scammed by the buyers claiming they never got the item and then , also want a refund even though the buyers did get the item.
  • Guys,

Let me offer a piece of advice. Paypal will ALWAYS SCREW YOU! When you purchase anything on ebay, ALWAYS PAY VIA CREDIT CARD. Paypal does not care if you lose money. Their seller protection is a bunch of crap. Every time I paid via funds from paypal or my bank and did not receive the item, PAYPAL SCREWED ME!

    ALWAYS PAY VIA CREDIT CARD.

Ditto with always using a credit card.
    When in doubt, don't.
  • Thank goodness you used a credit card. It is much easier to dispute the charge and get your money back. Do it right away, they will credit your account while they investigate.

In most cases, it's because the user got snookered by a phishing eMail and handed over their login information to the scammer. In some cases, it's because they have a trojan on their system passing along information. Not much eBay can do about user stupidity.

When I buy gold Bufalos I usually just go with reputable sources like Gainesville coins. That's the only ebayer I get them from. This seller looked have sold coins in the past too. I see yours and then someone else negged him from a $800 gold buffalo. Could be hjacked, but on the other hand it looks like a seller gone bad hat was desperate to get some quick cash so made a couple of bogus auctions.

sorry this happened to you - that is a very large bummer. I would definitely disput PP and contact CC company. PP should pay - or sue them for false advertising.

Call the small claims court in the guy's town. Find out if they will act on an out of state judgment. If so, you can sue him in small claims court where you live, then file the judgment with the sheriff in his jurisdiction.

Hey Russ... the account gets hijacked, where is the ebay security to prevent the hijacked funds from being redirected to the hijacker ?
