PO-1 fans (don't really know how smart we are!) - my YN made another one! 1853-O Arrows & Rays

claychaserclaychaser Posts: 4,406 ✭✭✭✭
My 10 year old YN is now 2 for 2 on making PCGS PO-1's. This one bought from junk box at a local B&M shop.

Cool coin!! For those of us that don't know the series, how was the date determined? Is it a 1 year only type coin or...?

1853 was the only year rays were used on the obverse, together with arrows at the date (although the date is not visible). The rays were removed in 1854 but arrows stayed for 2 more years.

    Cool coinimage

Arrows and Rays were added in 1853 only to show the reduced amount of silver in the coins. The silver was reduced because of rampant hoarding due to rising silver prices causing a shortage in coinage.

Edited to add: My wording was confusing. As Dennis said, the arrows stayed for two more years, but this was the only year with rays.

Cool! Gets me wondering, though. If pricing guides start including PO1 coins and they show high values, will the AGs of the world dry up as coin doctors fire up their rock tumblers in the name of Obscene Profit™? Will TPGs then start bodybagging coins for artificial wear?

That's an awesome coin. Would you mind sharing the purchase price out of the junk box? I can't imagine it was much more than junk silver...what a cool coin!

This is exactly my fear. I like the look of cool old problem-free, heavily worn coins as much as anyone, but I think the "low ball registry" is a horrible idea for exactly that reason.

I am not a smart man, but I just don't get this whole PO-1 thing. Why would you want to pay shipping and grading fees to have the satisfaction of having a documented very bad coin?

Obviously your motives can not be economic. Nor do you want to own a coin that is attractive.

This is not a put-down. Each collector certainly has a right to have personal preferences. I know many collectors would laugh at my "collection" of BU Krugerrands, junk silver dollars, milk-spotted Eagles and 90% silver, but this is just an inexpensive PM play to me, separate from my coin collection.

Would some PO-1 fans enlighten me? I am fairly new to this board. Thanks in advance. image

Mostly because people will pay very good money for the ultimate low grade...and some people do enjoy low ball coins (not me...lol I don't really get the attraction either image ). Eventually I'm quite certain it will be just the way messydesk put it though.

I think my YN worked him to about 5 bucks or so for it, when silver was at 8X face.

There are two reasons I like lowball coins:
    1. The coin served its purpose. It's not perfect. It was used. A lot. Who knows who spent it, where they spent it, or what they spent it on. It's a piece of history.
    2. The coin survived all those years in circulation with no damage. How many times do you find XF/AU coin with scratches or rim bumps? Pretty often. But to see a problem free PO-1 coin. That's amazing.

A possible third reason - although not really one I susbscribe to - would be to own the best worst coin. It's the same idea as owning a 70, which would be the best best coin. The best worst is still the best of something image

Believe it or not but there are Jefferson nickels with less detail certified MS65. image

He's into coins more than slabs, but likes the accomplishment of "making" a coin.

He has a really nice set of Walkers in a Dansco, with a goal of problem-free "Littleton: quality coins. All but 2 so far are from silver buckets.

He likes to buy the PCGS coins for the more expensive coins in his typeset.
