TV Shows Involving Coin Collecting

I have seen two shows that invovled coin collecting. Both, I thought, were very off base factually. Its been awhile since I've seen them.
One was an episode of the Unit. One of the wives found a coin in an old millitary hat sewed in. It turned out it was worth a lot (about $100,000) because it was some rare variety (that I don't believe exists in real life). A coin dealer was stereotyped as offering basically nothing for it, and the coin ended up being stolen by another dealer when she went to sell it. She was not paying attention, they guy switched the coin out with another coin when he looked at it, and they had agreed to do the transaction the next day. She did not notice until he was long gone. Of course, he was never seen again.
The other one was a CSI or something to that nature. Counterfieters were invovled, and get this...they were counterfieting common jefferson nickels
. That made me laugh.
Has anyone else seen coin collecting on a TV episode? Just thought I would share.

Unfortunately they were either stolen or sold for almost nothing.
(This was one of the first couple years of the show starting).
My fave was an old "Dennis the Menace" where Dennis spends one of Mr. Wilson's rare Mercury dimes in a vending machine.
All in all a pleasant episode, if not quite factual or believable to us.
Also, there was an episode of Monk that involved a coin dealer and his coin shop.

<< <i>Victor Buono, eh?

You are correct - Victor Buono. I just IMDB'd him. He was great as King Tut in Batman (was only 43 when he passed away in '82). I didn't realize that he was 6'3" - he must have been quite an imposing figure.
Editted to say 43 instead of 45. Gotta stop watching football and posting at the same time.
Victor Buono was in an episode on Hawaii Five-O called "The $100,000 Nickel"
From IMDB:
"Other rare coins and their values depicted in this episode are: 1879 four-dollar gold Stella--$18,000; Octagonal 1915 Panama-Pacific Expo $50 gold--$15,000; Round 1915 Panama-Pacific Expo $50 gold--$15,000; 1796 Silver Dollar--$20,000; 1975 Liberty Cap gold Eagle--$12,000"

I recall a few episodes concerning Mr Wilson and his coin collection. One that I can recall had Mr Wilson holding up an 1886 Seated dime. The Joseph Kearns who played Mr Wilson was an avid Numismatist.
There were at least 2 episodes of Little House on the Prairie that had really good shots of coins... one had Laura or her brother finding an 187? Indian head cent and another had Carrie finding a Buffalo Nickel (continuity error)
There was a My Three Sons where the youngest finds a '14-D cent and
an Andy Griffith where Ange convinces Barn that his buffalo is facing the
wrong way and would make a great "investment".
Good ole Mr Wilson's gold coins get stolen by the transient and Dennis gets them back.
dang I am subjected to some strange shows by my kids.
The story opens with divers salvaging shipwreck coins. Those $20 Libs were way too shiny, but at least there is a visit to a coin dealer looking up pricing.
I can never stay engaged with a L&O ep to actually follow the plot, but it was fun for a single viewing.
And there were a couple of episodes where the Susan B. Anthony dollar was lampooned on The Simpsons.
<< <i>Well, the Family Guy dad found a Rhode Island Ship Medal underneath the carpet that Quagmire was cutting up.

And then there was the time that Marge gave Lisa "a Sacagawea dollar!: You can take that to the bank and get a real dollar!"

<< <i>Wasn't there an episode of The Simpson's where Homer finds a 1933 Saint? >>
That sounds funny!!!
Ther are some Beverly Hillbillies ones with coins. One person before on the forum brought up one where Dreisdale tries to interest Jed (played by Buddy Ebsen) in investing in rare dimes, showing him an album of them which were from Ebsen's own private collection in reality.

The 1951 pilot episode for the television version of "The Amos 'n' Andy Show," involved a 1913 Liberty Head nickel. The TV episode was adapted from an Amos 'n' Andy radio script. Now I may be incorrect -- I'm going from recollections of a 1978-era conversation with Abe Kosoff -- but I believe that 1913 nickel radio script was written by a coin collecting comedian of the golden age of radio era, a frequent performer on the old Fred Allen radio program who had the stage name, ParkyerKarKus. His real name was Harry Einstein. (And his two sons, David and Albert, went on to become famous in their own right. You know them today as comic stuntman "Super Dave" Osborn and film-maker Albert Brooks.)

Watch it! I love this one.

If I remember it correctly it is one where he is at a flea market or a garage sale and is going through a box and is complaining about the sheet of stamps having the airplane printed upside down and the violin being a strata-who-vias....
i thought there was an episode of matlock with a 36 something..............can't remember what coin
<< <i>Another Las Vegas episode, Sam lost a 1895 Morgan in a poker game that was willed to her by a client. >>
I remember that one. Her boss (Tom Selleck) won it from her and at the end of the show he pressed it into a coin album---it was the last Morgan that he needed to complete his set.

or something made up for the skit?
an old desk in which is found a box of coins. When Rob suggests calling for
a numismatist to appraise them Buddy suggests they'll probably need an old-
mismatist since none of the coins are new. The dealer says their 1909 quart-
er in perfect condition is worth $40 and the buffalos on the mound aren't as
good if there are none on the plane. Buddy finds one that was off the plane
and on a bus. When the dealer says that the nickel has the indian on one side
and the buffalo on the other, Buddy finds one exactly the opposite.
Hey, I didn't write this stuff.
Eventually they're told that the coins are worth $400 but if they wait they'll be
worth thousands by the turn of the century. The jokes go down hill from there
and some folks here want to kill the messenger.
Interestingly the dealer said that one of the coins was the first he'd ever seen.
When Rob asked him if it was valuable the dealer said no, it's a brand new dime
that he'd not yet seen. Rob had used it to pry open the box. It was episode 133
and first aired 27, Oct 65. The clad quarter was released the next week but the
dime didn't make its appearance until January. No doubt the writer was thinking
of the new clad dime when he wrote the script.
I don't remember a Simpsons Episode with a 1933 Saint, but I do remember one when Krusty runs for Congress, and you overhear a debate in progress: it gets decided that henceforth all Sacagawea Dollars will be made of Chocolate since kids are going to eat them anyway.

there was an episode in which lucy had to search for a half dollar in a vat of starch
as a publicity stunt for some company/product
there was a part where an old $100,000 bill was offered to the dealer
for placing a bet. the dealer had to have an older guy look at it to
authenticate it before play could continue.
holding it to the light the guy says` yep, its real alright`

I read a book once set in 1911 where a character remarked of another's parsimoniousness - "she pinches a nickel so hard that the Indian's riding the buffalo." Got a chuckle from that.

There was an Ozzie and Harriet episode where Joseph Kearns, the same actor that plays Mr. Wilson, plays a coin dealer that sells Ozzie some old Spanish coins... but I just do not remember the story line. I think Ozzie was playing a joke on his neighbor about finding them in his yard or something like that...
