***Rainbow Washington-Carver...tough commem to locate with color....EDITED to add larger pic

Vibrant green, sky blue and violet rim toning with a golden wash on the obverse. Reverse has deep amber on the rims with the same golden wash. Lots of luster! Pics aren't bad but as you can see, there's a tad too much shadow here and there hiding the colors. The obverse rim colors are uniform and bright.

For you toned commem collectors out there, what do you think it's worth?

It does have a image so there is a built in premium. I would guess $200 - $230.

Personally, I find the toning very attractive.

  • Wow, that's a beauty. Definitely a premium for the color.

RegistryCoin, image, I've definitely never seen one like that! Quite amazing!
What do you think caused that toning?
    Do people question its NT-ness?

I haven't heard of any questions as to it's originality, but then again, it hasn't been displayed that much. I would think that questioning it's originality is probably appropriate, although personally, I cannot attest to it being AT or NT, and have no idea what helped to create that toning. To me it is simply unlike any other W-Cs that I have seen. It is in a pcgs (6) holder, not that that makes any difference. In any case, it is a pretty coin, and, like the coin in the opening post, definately not "fugly", imo.

RegistryCoin, I just assumed that given how spectacular it is, some might question it. I've had them question my WC, too, believe it or not....although I've seen other toned WCs that have very similar colors, usually just in smaller doses. I'd love to see yours in-hand. image

Like all TPG opinions, I question the toning too, but that is part of the fun, especially if one is going to delve into the "toned coin" arena. The current pervasive "market acceptibility" approach makes holding a coin like this a bit easier, but nonetheless, there is always going to, and probably should be a questionability attached. I would appreciate your "in hand" opinion.

SS- I had a dozen raw pieces in hand last month that were lock 64's with vivid colors similar to yours. Alas, I was unable to buy them. They were part of a roll quantity that appeared to have been stored together in a Wayte Raymond album.image
