MINT SCREW UP...

I ordered 10 James Monroe $1 Coin Covers (P24 $14.95 each) and they shipped them to me.
I had the unopened box listed on ebay, 2 weeks later, when I get a phone call from the US Mint.
They said the box contained 10 Annual Unc Dollar Sets (XA1 $31.95 each).
They said they would send me a return mailing label.
I ended the auction and opened the box.
They were correct. 10 Unc Sets.
The invoice even said 10 coin covers and was for $154.95.
Now what would have happened if the coins had sold on ebay?
Somebody would have gotten a good deal on some Annual UNC Dollar Sets and The Mint would have been after my A$$ for me to pay the difference.
MAKES YOU WONDER ABOUT ALL OF THESE UNOPENED US MINT BOXES SELLING ON EBAY???
You may pay $2100 for a RP Platinum Set sealed in a Mint box which may actually contain a $14.95 James Madison First Day Coin Cover!!!

Would you believe that the Mint once sent me an empty box WITHOUT a coin in it a while back!
There should be a special label for the packaging and box without the coin!

That SUX....well kinda. Thank God the mint caught their mistake and let you know. Otherwise what a nightmare you and the buyer could have had.

What I meant to say was it is a sealed shipping box. I know some of the sets come in their own sealed box with a Mint # on them. These 10 sets were sealed in the brown cardboard shipping box, shipped USPS. Does it have a form of identity on its label?

I have the same problem. This is bullcrap. There mistake now they want it back.

I have 5 bullion coin unopened boxes. I no longer trust the mint.

What should we do keep them tell them they are out of luck so it doesn't happen again.

Or send them back and worry in the future about there quality control.

What the mint did sounds like a mistake but you sound like a thief...

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

The shipping box was the exact size of the shipping box containing the previous covers. It was heavier, but I didn't notice that when I received it.

I know it was a US Mint mistake but if i had already sold them the Mint would be after me wanting more money.
They can make a mistake but I cant!

I feel your pain but whats the point of carrying on?

Did you discuss your concerns with the Mint Rep that contacted you? If not, then why not?

The way I see is that mistakes happen and this one was caught BEFORE you sold the item on EBay. Perhaps your outlook should be of relief instead of outrage.

May I ask what the reason was for NOT opening the shipping box when it was received?

If it was for First Day of Issue reasons, a mint sealed First Day cover does qualify without having to meet the issue date deadline. The only problem with your box is that it only contained 10 sets whereas PCGS requires a minimum of 50 sets.

<< <i>3. U.S. Mint Official American Presidency $1 Coin Cover Series. The original shipping boxes need not be sealed, but the covers must be submitted intact and unopened. A minimum of 50 covers may be submitted through the Bulk Submissions program. PCGS is currently developing an option for encapsulating the entire cover. PCGS does not offer a First Day of Mintage (or Production) option. >>

No outrage here. My point is there may be many more incorrect items in sealed mint boxes.
Why sell them in the sealed box? That is what some people want! I have sold many in the sealed box and they do fetch a premium.
I know they are individually sealed buy some people don't understand. They don't want coins that have been picked through (I guess).

SOMEONE EXPLAIN THE GOLDEN RULE INVOLVING THE GOVT.

    Imagine this:
Say I buy (on ebay) a 2007 Platinum Reverse Proof set in a couple of months. The set is unopened and qulaifies for "First Strike." I send the set to PCGS to be graded. They open it up and it is a Gold Bulffalo or something. The invoice clearly says a RP Platinum set was supposed to be in the box. PCGS sends the coin back to me. What happens from there?
Too late for a US Mint refund.
Ebay seller says it is not his fault.
How can I prove such a mistake was made.
I end up left with a $2500+ gold buffalo (or whatever)?

I just opened my box and have the same problem. I haven't received a call yet. The box is the same size as my box of Washington FDCC. I didn't notice that it was heavier, but it did rattle around a little more than it should have. I have a bunch of sealed mint boxes that I might open now. I wonder who the guy was packing boxes that day, since the packing slip clearly shows the item name and number.
The only other problem that I had before was when I ordered a few commemoratives a while back. Most were fine, but a few didn't have the outside sleeve and a few didn't have a COA. II sent those back and waited about 6 weeks for my refund.

Especially if the product has traded hands prior to submission.
I'd say the problem could be worked out if the original purchaser submitted the coin but what if the unopened box was bought on ebay and then submitted for grading?
  • Options
I understand this might be a minor problem to some.

However I have to many unopened boxes that I cant return.

This maybe an isolated incident but I have many $ tied up here.

I am suprised many dont feel the way I do about designations that orders must be sealed in empty boxes.

I am not amused by the mints mistake nor am I about to make this easy for them.

    Do what I do.

Open everything that comes from the mint when it arrives. That way you can validate that what you ordered and what was shipped are one in the same.

Stop buying unopened mint boxes off of EBay. If you can't resist the urge then just open em up when you receive them. If its not what you bought then I don't have an answer other than quit buying unopened boxes. Unless you have a super honest seller, the seller will cry foul, you'll cry foul (for obvious reasons) and that will be that. Negs will fly and folks will be frustrated.

The US Mint is a clearing house. They sell and ship thousands upon thousands of products each day. I seriously doubt that common products are packaged as they are ordered. I believe that they are packaged ahead of time (like 10 First Day Coin Covers, 20 First Day coin covers, 100 First Day CC, etc.) and then stored in the warehouse waiting to be sold. When an order comes in, they just get a label slapped on them then they get shipped out.
It appears as if someone at the warehouse put Dollar Sets where the First Day CC should have been. They figured it out and contacted each buyer. End of Story.

Other than not ordering from the US Mint, there really isn't anything that anybody can do about this aside from talking with a US Mint representative. (i.e. Customer Service) In an operation as large as the US Mint, mistakes are bound to happen. Unfortunately this isn't one that can be capitalized on such as a clipped planchet or Smooth Edged Presidential buck.

My advise is to just open your boxes. If you plan on sending them to PCGS unopened for grading, then PCGS will have to deal with what to do. More than likely, the coins will just be returned to you.

The bottom line is this, if you are going to take the risk of not validating what you ordered from the Mint, for whatever reason, you run the risk of the product not being what you thought it was simply because mistakes do happen.

If this had happened to me, I would have contacted the Mint (since I open everything) and the situation would have been resolved.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    That is a good question.

Many people send the unopened boxes to a TPG and an error would be found at that point. If you ended up selling on e-bay I am sure it is rare enough you could explain the situation to the mint and maybe they would just take the relatively small loss.

I would believe that the mint accounting procedures are pretty tight to where they would
ask one in this situation to contact the e-bay buyer and return the coins and then reimburse
    the fees.

I was pleasantly surprised when the mint sent me a replacement six months
after the sale for a shipment where there was packaging but no coin. They must keep
close tabs on what they are doing. An ounce is worth its weight in gold - so to speak.

So if you are that upset, open the boxes. Life is too short to stress over this. You haven't lost anything. As far as profits on these unopened items, you don't have them yet so you couldn't have lost them. Open all of your boxes, check to make sure you got the right thing, and then sell them on the bay or bst board. You will probably break even or make a little bit for your trouble. After you liquidate all of your inventory, never buy anything from a supplier as unreliable as the US Mint.

Find another line of work where you can deal with a supplier who has more integrity. The US mint is the devil incarnate.
Luck happens when preparation meets opportunity.
