Why does it cost $30 to ship a coin? All of his shipping charges seem slightly high.

Shows as "only" $20 to ship it here to NC. I guess people can add whatever they want, SOMEONE will pay it.

I just mailed a priority package within the states. Insured for $1800 with signature confirmation. Sticker shock at the P.O. $30.75. Registered mail would have been about the same. The insurance alone was $18.10.

How heavy was it? You shudda used the flat rate box. Cost me about $22 to send 40 coins to California. Some of those charges seem high but not ridiculously so. Experienced shippers know what it costs to send stuff.

You would have saved significant money with a Flat Rate Prio box and sending it Registered. ANything more than ~$700 is cheaper via Registered due to the lower insurance fees.

I checked after the recent postal rate increases and the breakeven point between registered and insured is $1200. If the package is worth over $1200, send it registered, if under $1200 send it insured.

You are right Barry ... $700+ is around the cut off line when Registered "Insured" Mail is the cheapest way to go ... Of course there are a lot of you that like to send coins with a wing and a prayer ...

None of those charges are high ... Insurance IS included ... unlike a lot of auctions ...

Yep, sending $1800 registered mail will cost $20. If you do restricted delivery it becomes around $25 or $26 or so. The I usually add in a few dollars to compensate me for my time waiting in line at the post office because you can't mail these any other way.

Registered mail is the safest way - and that's all I use for anything over $500; regardless of costs of postage.

Didn't realize you could use a Priority Flat Rate Box - and Register it - for less money than standard mailing with Registration fees.

$30 for an $1800 dollar item does seem a bit high though. Especially since the weight of a One Cent coin
holdered isn't that heavy !!

If the contents are common and replaceable use insured if it makes sense to do so; if they are hard or impossible to replace then use registered.

31 morgans. I'll try the flat rate box next time. My P.O. wants all registered pkgs. wrapped with the brown threaded tape that you have to wet on the sticky side with no clear tape used. Is this the case with most Post Offices ?

This is what I do for rolls or even one blue box of 20 holders and it cost 4.60 as long as it is taped it will be OK.

I just mailed a 2K coin to a board member registered and the total was $18.05.

Shipping correctly is not cheap.

Yep,

Registered is just an additional fee to just about any type of shipping. You just have to make sure any sealed edges are covered with that brown gum tape.

Do you mean physically flat (some priority mail boxes are cubes) or a flat-rate box? Either way, you can send registered mail.

Not only that, but you can order priority mail boxes of the USPS web site and they drop them of at your house for free.

We recently paid $50 SH&I on an $800 value coin from one of the big New York City auction houses. But we knew that when we placed the bid, as do the bidders on these items. The charge is not unreasonable, but someone not agreeing with the terms can simply not bid.

Yes and get the $8.95 flat rate. About a year ago that was supposed to have been eliminated, but either it never got changed at all OR it was changed and the change later undone to the old way. Be sure to leave a couple of the flat rate logos visible tho. You won't get the flat rate if the logos are covered. There are at least two different sizes of flat rate boxes too; one like Heritage uses for lots of catalogs plus a longer thinner one.

It's probably legit with insurance costs and everything on high dollar coins like that, but if you win one with that kinda shipping and get the coin in a bubble mailer with a couple stamps I'd go ape

To mr wam98 . BAJJERFAN is correct . All registered mail needs brown tape
on the "SEAMS" But for flat rate box , you do not need to cover a 'flat rate logo'
as it is not located on a seam .
