2007 Topps Sterling Case Break, What do you think of this product?
Let's break a case of 2007 Topps Sterling. Last years case of Topps Sterling was so much fun. I don't see how we can top last year's case card Mickey Mantle auto 3 piece beauty, but we can certainly have some fun trying. Please share your thoughts on this product. Let's see if our run of Hot fun cases continue from our good friends at Shortporch.com
Box 1:
Very happy to pull a couple Yankees. The Mystery pack has a Burgundy Yogi Berra 13/14. The highlighted player of box is Roger Clemens. One of the /250 base cards has him as a Yank, but the others 2 are as a Red Sox. The 5 pieces on the MVP AL are all the same color and as a Boston Red Sox. Not the unbelievable start like last year, but a sweet looking card.
Thanks, Mike

Cards look nice, but with UD Masterpiece hitting before them, I can't help but think they tried borrowing a page from UD...
Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12
Looking for Al Hrabosky and any OPC Dave Campbells (the ESPN guy)

Not to derail the thread, but what do you think about UD Masterpiece? I thought about picking up a pack or two at Target the other day.

Bought a blaster of them and wasn't overly impressed--too many retired players in the set for my taste.

Pull any autos??
So my question for you is this: How can you repeatedly bust modern stuff and not get your money's worth in terms of real market value, yet every review you put out is not only positive, but a resounding approval? You can't possibly be giving unbiased reviews of these products, can you? It seems like you're promoting products rather than reviewing them. Just being honest.

LMAO
It might have been prudent to wait to make that inquiry
UNTIL AFTER he had shown us the pretty pictures.
10 packs will suck. DLP is breaking that mold with hot boxes and hot cases. The only thing guarenteed in most boxes of cards, is that
23 of the 24 packs will be crap!
Kevin
<< <i>Mike, I enjoy reading about your breaks, mainly because I almost never break modern but I'm still curious about what they put out there. I've read a bunch of your reviews but I find it somewhat wierd that you never have a bad word to say about a product. I understand you enjoy breaking this stuff and like all the new ideas and designs, but for most collectors, the average modern break is at best a moderate disappointment, and at worst a complete waste of money. That's not to say that there aren't great breaks here and there (your Mantle, for example), but in terms of what you can buy and sell singles for on ebay, you'd be lucky to get 60% of your purchase price back. For example, your Upper Deck Black case break yielded one out of 6 boxes where someone would get more than their money's worth. I more than anyone understand the fun of busting wax, but not when I lose time after time after time.

On the website in his signature line- the review has this footnote on the end...
A special Thank You to our friends at Topps for allowing The Cardboard Village the opportunity to review their GREAT products!!!
Not sure if there is some sort of arrangement or not.. Just thought I would share.
Not saying anything one way or the other.. By the way - I love the breaks and really enjoy seeing the new products.
Topps, please PM me for the address to put on those 10 cases of Heritage next month - k thanks bye.
onlyanumber, Thanks, I did not do any of UD Masterpiece, but from what I heard it was a fun break.
mrbecker712, Thanks.
CDsNuts, Thanks. I could not find my post on Epic last year, maybe someone can. I don't recall my posts and words, but whatever I did say, the pulls spoke for themselves, which I let all my breaks do. I may had said they was nice looking cards, but I gave most of those cards away. Was full of Eddie Murry's Pieces and No Autograph in the entire case. Anyone who saw that break would had passed on buying that product, I'm sure that break saved many in our hobby from even testing them. I could had called them the product of the year but everyone would say I was full of it. That's why I encourage others to voice in on what they think of my breaks. I want to find something good about the cards I buy and will try to find a positive spin on my breaks and if they suck I'm sure the people will voice in and maybe I would saved some the disappointments. If anything would had turn me away from the hobby I love is that Epic break, since that didn't I don't think anything will. But some positive came from the Epic, I was able to get some nice looking Game Used cards to some fans of the players that would may had never been able to get them. I Just enjoy busting, going in to a case, I know that money is gone and I might as well enjoy them, which I do then trade or pass on the ones that don't interest me, so someone else can enjoy them, even if I come out losing Financially.
JeremyDie1, thanks We hooked what can we say. The rush in opening a new product can be short lived now with only 1 maybe 2 hits per box.
storm888, Thanks, Like I said before the cards them self will speak volumes for any product, My commentary is just that and I'm sure most will go buy from what they see, not what one person has to say. That's why I want people to tell me what they think about a product, which is more valuable then my take on it.
nam812, Thanks, Did I do that?
metalmike, Thanks, I can't find many on card autos anymore. I sure hope this trend ends soon.
joestalin, Thanks, these cost me $230 a box, I think $20 a box less then last year if I recall correctly. Yes, all breaks can be a huge disappointment and others be happy time. I guess it's depends on what you suspecting going in. My case break will show what's in my case and nothing else. I'm looking for the case card, which is hard to find if you are only opening boxes, like you said many boxes are very disappointing if you expecting a return on your investment.
Rogermn, Thanks, Yes I'm very Proud to say Topps has been a sponsor of My Site, almost from the beginning of it about four years ago and does sends my website boxes to review and Upper Deck said they was but we have not received the first one yet, Inkworks sends us boxes regular also to review. I support My Sponsors and if you want to call this promoting the product, I don't have any problem with that.
mudflap02, Thanks I'm sure the Clemens not the case card and if it is topps gonna hear from me. I'm expecting some better hits along the way. I paid $5 more, but I have had super luck buying from Shortporch, Mantle Auto, triple auto of Pujols, Bonds and My man Jeters. Plus they are unbelivable people to work with. I bought a case of Tristar Cut from them and sold out the case at $140 a box on my site. Then I saw he was offering them for under $100 and mentioned it to him, not complaining just questioning on it. He explained he was fortunate to get a couple boxes direct from tristar thats why he was offering them at that. He said to make things fair he took over $400 off my agreement to pay for them. Most of the other dealer sites state if you lock into a price you are stuck with it. No matter what. My Site has had a few nice hits from boxes sent from Topps, but overall you will see most of the pulls are not what most call the best from the product. The cases are not from Topps or Upper Deck I spend my money and put in my time to showcase what a case may deliver. I do it to show how a case will play out and maybe save someone some funds if they don't like what they see and if they do like and buy the product with the information I provided, I only wish them the best. A box review is nice it will either be a good or bad box and that's about it.
Box 2:
Very happy to pull a couple more Yankees, well really 1 yank and a YAWKEY. The Mystery pack has a White Mickey Mantle 32/50. The highlighted player of box 2 is Ted Williams of The Boston Red Sox's. The 6 Pieces spells YAWKEY, 2 bats and 4 jerseys. No Autos yet but a great looking card of The best Hitter of all Time in my book. Did I get the Red Sox's and Yankees case? Also 4 Yawkey Way is where Williams Statue is located.
Thanks, Mike
I have no problem with your philosophy of letting the rips do the talking and I now see that's what you're trying to do by titling the thread "What do you think of this product?" Like I said in my original post, I do enjoy seeing what comes out of these boxes and you're definitely helping a lot of people out who consider buying new products to rip.
<< <i> the average modern break is at best a moderate disappointment, and at worst a complete waste of money. >>
I couldn't agree more.
JeremyDie1, Thanks
stormsurge, Thamks
Box 3:
Yes, Very happy to pull a Yankees Autograph. The Mystery pack has a Burgundy Ryne Sandberg 03/14 a great Cubs second Baseman. The highlighted player of box is Yankees ace Right handed Pitcher from Taiwan. Chien-Ming Wang. The 4 pieces reveals his winning percentage .711 including his auto numbered 01/10. Got me in the mood to go too 7 11 and get a case of drinks and some hot dogs.
Thanks, Mike

Nothing on ebay
Would I rather take $230 and buy one pack of 2007 cards or a 59 Koufax? NP, gimme the Koufax.
How many "triple thread", "cut signature", "game used jerseys" can they make? Unlimited.
How many 59 Koufax's are out there? Not many.
"Molon Labe"
I like the 2006 ALSO
<< <i>Collect what you like. Vintage, modern, pre war, etc. I enjoy to collect them all. Some people collect certain players or teams. It really doesn't matter. Diversity has always been my preference in anything I collect or invest. It really doesn't make me right or wrong. Thats what is great about the hobby. If everyone liked the same thing, it would be a bore. >>
100% agree...
I have vintage, psa/dna, autos, game used, reprints, rookies...i love it all!
<< <i>How many 59 Koufax's are out there? Not many. >>
I'd be willing to guess about 30-50,000.
Easy.

As far as resale value is concerned, That part of the hobby does not mean much to me but it is obvious it means almost everything to many and if I were doing it for monetary value , I would be pissed if I got hosed , naturally it is awesome to get that really great pull as for me ,
I really can't say I have pulled anything all that great , But you have to be in it to win it and I would feel like I was missing something if I didn't buy , I have to have at least a little bit of everything and If I am looking for specific monster cards , everyone want's a million bucks for them , so I would rather have the excitement of trying to pull it myself , that is where the fun lies for me
As far as the UD Masterpiece , I really like those too, I pretty much like all of the painted cards that are out there .
It just seems like they went through a lot more time and trouble to put out a better looking cards and that is what I am after as they all hang on my walls , what is going to stink is taking them all down when I have to paint next month . . . Hopefully .
Box 9:
1 Box to go which should be an autograph
I did not know Topps put Singers in the letter Lineup!!!
The Yankee connection Sterling case continues. Very happy to find the Letter card who played 2 years with the Yankee. Also found this HOF'er, one of the best hitters of all time. The Mystery pack we found our 1/1 Letter card which every 10 box case will produce. 210 Game Winner Kenny Rodgers who won 18 games with the Yanks, the letter E came from his 2004 AL All-Star jersey as stated on back.
The highlighted player of box is Tony Gwynn. The 4 pieces reveals 220H the numbers of hits he had in 1997. 04/10 serial numbered.
Thanks, Mike
Thanks all for checking out the Sterling break case, it sure has been fun.
Another sweet Yankee auto. The Mystery pack we found another white bordered Bonds numbered the guy he beat Aaron 44/50 .
The highlighted player of box is Yogi Berra . The cardnmbered 01/10 contain 3 different jersey colors.
The best card from the case, same as last year the Mantle, easy choice. I cannot figure out the worst, I'll let you all decide it.
Overall great effort out of the Topps camp. Second time around usually have a hard time living up to the first. Sterling second year is just as special as the first and I can't wait to see what Topps comes up for us in Sterling 2008 edition.
Thanks, Mike
Collecting Bowman Chrome Phillies Rookie Cards and Mike Schmidt certified auto cards.
Robert
kind of $ return would I get for the single cards on EBAY?
auto..cut off...that shouldn't be in a high end product. You have to be majorly dissapointed in the case hit...Kenny Rodgers
letterman..OUCH
Topps once again stayed true to its form and put out NO patch material. I would bet anything that they sell their patch material to UD
or DLP. Can you even get 10 bucks for a triple Clemens jersey now a days?
Best Hit....TIE Mantle 1/1 Wang 1/10 Jersey auto
Worst Hit....Seaver Triple Jersey
Could Surprise......Man Ram Auto 8 piece
For me, there just isn't enough bang for the buck with this stuff. Even autos of Yogi and Gwynn are average at best. There should of been
more cuts, move vintage pieces and more ink and of course ON CARD INK!!!!!
Thanks for sharing.
Kevin

Good post
I feel exactly the same way. I only sell a little on ebay to offset some of the cost. And only sell the cards that don't fit my wants. I sold my letter patch from the 1 box I bought which made my Bob Gibson cost about 160. Usually end up just spending what I do make from selling on more cards anyway. I love the thrill of taking the chance at a great pull and last year I got quite a few of those. Before getting back into cards I spent a ton of money on lottery scratch tickets. Won a lot and lost a lot but had nothing to show at all when I didn't win. Although in 2005 I did hit a 10 grand winner
