If you cherrypick a coin on ebay...

... only to realize that it isn't anything special, do you return the coin or keep it?

This is geared more toward situations in which the price you pay for the coin is more
than the regular coin is worth without the specific variety.

If I buy it... I bought it.
    When in doubt, don't.

If you were using my ebay auctions as an approval cherry picking service you'd be on my blocked bidder list in relatively short time

    It's NOT a "buy-it-on-approval" format!

If you bid on it and win, you own it........

    unless they seller misrepresented it.

If you assumed it might be more......

it just plain sucks to be you!

So, what did you think you won and what did you actually win? image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Happens all the time. Some auctions I bid on the seller gets a really good price, sometimes 3 or 4 times what its worth. It seems when I stare at a picture long enough it turns into a rare variety only to revert back again during shipping image

If I bought it, I keep it, unless it was grossly misrepresented in the auction. I have yet to return one.

I've never returned an Item that I thought was a Vam, but I was just curious as to what the board thought of this.

I think its unethical to buy coins, look at them to see if their Vams, and then return them.

If your at a show it's a different story because you have the coins in hand and can clearly see what you have before buying.

You buy it, you bought. It's a matter of honor.

I've done it. I've scored several times and I've rolled craps a few as well.

Returning it just doesn't seem right to me, unless, or course, as stated above that the picture or the coin was intentionally misrepresented.

You know, just one good score can make up for several losses. I've had a couple turn out so well, that I could lose on a dozen in a row and still come out ahead.

When you bid on a bad picture and end up with 5 CAMs and DCAMs on a '50 proof set, it's hard to justify whining over missing a couple here and there.

You got to pay to play and man up and take your lumps when you make a mistake.

The process engages all the hidden forces of economic law on the side of destruction, and it does it in a manner which not one man in a million is able to diagnose."

I couldn't agree with you more.

If I added up all of my Cherrypicks it would definitely cover my losses.

I just thought this would be an interesting topic to see different points of view.

You keep it. Say you bought a regular coin, thinking it was just a regular coin. Then when you received the coin it turns out to be a rare variety worth three times what the normal coin was worth would you return it to the seller? Probably not, so why should you return it just because you tried to cherrypick and it turns out not to be the cherrypick you thought it was? With cherrypicking on the bay you win some and you lose some. But wanting to return it because it isn't what you thought it was is just trying to have all the reward without any of the risk.

Return is ethical if you are convinced that there was fraud or gross mis-representation, else, live with it!

I have "cherrypicked" 3 coins that I wasn't sure about. all 3 were coins that at the price I bought them I was ok with owning them. All 3 turned out to be unrare varieties. i still have all 3. One might resell one of these days now that I think about it. But returning never crossed my mind. --Jerry

You did not cherrypick anything in this case.
You should be able to resell it at minimal loss unless someone bid you up on the same thoughts or a shill was used. Why not just resell it if you do not want it? This way you may lose a few dollars or possibly even break even and you will not have the hassle of returning it and paying the postage and risk getting the seller mad at you. Simply resell it-this does not seem like a big problem to me. Bob

If you "cherrypick" a coin, and it ain't the wonderful coin you thought it was, it wasn't a "cherrypick".
It's what is known in numismatic circles as a "screwup".
You need to learn the proper numismatic terms.

A fair seller will take the item back with no questions asked. If you thought you cherrypicked but you didn't , well it isn't fair as a buyer to return the item. What if you received more value than what you paid ? Would you send the seller more money ?

I'm trying to see this from both sides of the spectrum.

Unless the coin looked NOTHING like the image or was otherwise grossly misrepresented, I eat it as tuition.
