Michael Fahey And J.P. Martin Now Top 2 Graders In The World Working At Anacs

I thought I saw someone write a thread about this already, but I watch a TIVO program on HSN the Coin Collector and Jp Martin was the guest and said he is now with Anacs along with his mentor Michael Fayhe. Mr Taylor and Anacs has signed a contract with HSN and remember this!! HSN has the T/m for the First Day Of Issue on their coins only graded by Anacs. Big F=ing deal, First Day of fresh bread doesn't make a differents if you buy it two days later in the store.

Do you guys out here understand what type of money we are talking about in grading fees, yes they are discounted but Anacs will make huge $$$ off of the little collector that buys this MS Pr RP 70 crap from Anacs.

I am losing faith in the grading aspect of this hobby, these graders flock to one another every few years, what type of graded coins do you really think are in the holders? Buyer Beware! image

Unless there is smoe sort of revenue sharing I'd bet that at those prices that HSN is makin more per coin than annacs is.

I look at ALL of the top four TPGs and see coin grading and that other junk they have to do to keep the lights on. If they end up grading and attributing coins well, I am back with them. The other stuff is just there and is of no consequence to me directly. If they jump the fence entirely and kowtow to the ultrahype marketeers, then I won't waste my time at all.

It must not have worked out for JP at ICG...It's real hard for me to get worked up about HSN...you pay a price, you get a product...not happy with product, return it for refund. Buying coins or bullion on HSN is not for me but if others want to "do" HSN go for it.

Some people don't seem to care how much they spend for stuff. If HSN was trying to sell the only TPG graded MS70 2007 D? dime for $13,000 (there is a thread on this board about this coin and its uniqueness which is supposed to justify its being worth $13K) would that be any more outrageous than the outlandish prices HSN gets for the stuff they do sell?

I think there is a huge distinction between "grader" and "authenticator" that no one is making here. Of course all professional graders are required to have a superior knowledge of authentication, but a small few are light years ahead of the pack in authentication, and that would be Rick. The same is true of "grading ability" as, IMO, the best graders in the world are far from being the best authenticators with a VERY few exceptions.

Why didn't they just call it the HSN/ANACS grading service. And use the motto "It all looks prefect". Or we can slab more 70's than SGS can.

And I wonder how much it cost to grade if you own the graders and slabs?

Anybody else seeing a massive conflict of interest devleoping in this game?

I had to re-read your thread title and content. Your title Michael Fahey And J.P. Martin Now Top 2 Graders In The World Working At Anacs makes me think the thread is focussed on a claim that these two are the top two graders in the world and that they work at ANACS. But your thread rambles across many topics. The disection leads to:

    1) these two work at ANACS
    - So?
    2) ANACS and HSN have a contract
    - So? I have a contract with PCGS, my landlord, the Air Force, e-bay buyers/sellers, my utility companies, etc
    3) HSN has Trademark on First Day of Issue graded by ANACS
    - So?
    4) Old bread goes stale
    - True
    5) Grading fees are paid
    - True
    6) ANACS makes money off the little collector that buys PR/RP/MS70 coins
    - I think in the context of your thread ANACS gets their money from HSN. HSN makes money off their buyers
    7) You are losing faith in the grading aspect
    - Try a first tier service
    8) The coins in the holders may not match the grades assigned
    - Again, try a 1st tier service

You are correct but as so often happens here someone feels the conversation should continue (or they want to take over a thread) so they start it up again instead of moving on to a new topic.

I respect all comments and opinions. But let me ask you this? Do you know who in the hell at PCGS or NGC graded each and everyone of your coins. Jp Martin said there are 3 people that look at your coins. That is my biggest fear and should be yours and other collectors that bounce around and then raise their eyebrows when they are asked why did you leave your previous place of employment.

Jp Told America on Hsn,Here is how to grade a Bullion Silver Dollar Eagle. #1 On Bullion coins the highest point is the Rim.

#2 Besides the rim is the Breast.

#3 Other key areas are the luster and then the Sun.

#4 finally on the reverse the high points for grading is the Shield and the wings.

Last thing if there is any particals, dust, dirt, hair. This coin will never be a Perfect 70.

Michael Fayhe and Jp Martin are the 2 finalizers at Anacs to deem your coin a 70. If doesn't pass the other grader they will not even look at the coin and it will prob be a 65 or 67 grade if the coin doesn't get to the last top finalizer.

I am looking at two coins from HSN that I bought last year at a coin show for $35.00 a piece they were both 2007 first day issue, ms 70 Silver Eagles and one of the coins have a contact mark on the rim. And the other coin has a shiny hole on the shield. So this is what I don't get.

You must understand an ANACS, SGS, SEGS, etc 70 is not on average near as good as a PCGS 70. Why do you think you could get a MS70 silver Eagle for only $35? The answer is because it is not PCGS or NGC (with NGC being still below a PCGS 70). Not only are the grading standards different, but the grade gaurentee is different and the ability to include the coin in registry sets is different. The NGC Registry accepts PCGS or NGC graded coins. The PCGS registry only accepts PCGS coins.

Do you know who in the hell at PCGS or NGC graded each and everyone of your coins. No I do not know who graded my coins. Some of these were graded 15-20 years ago. Last I checked it does not matter who graded my coins, but which company graded them is very important.

I don't know what the lecture on how to grade a modern bullion coin has to do with my reply.

You would be wise not to use HSN as a source of numismatic wisdom. You will find much more of value in these forums. Separate the wheat from the chaff and there is much to be reaped.

I don't use HSN, but I do feel if I pay say Jp Martin and he worked at PCGS, I don't want him to change the way he grades because of the guidelines of the company he now works for. Do you feel me. I view your comments with wisdom also, I not here to chastise you or anyone else. But I want to play the game and don't like to lose.

I can teach anyone how to grade MS70 silver eagles. It is easy, just take every 50th piece and slab it as MS70, then slab the rest as MS69s. You can even do it blindfolded.

Come on now, Dennis, don't turn into a bullion/modern hater....you're too good for that.
Do you collect them? Deal in them? Submit them?

The problem (for PCGS) isn't that the MS70 are not worthy...it's more that a lot of MS69 are worthy and other MS69 aren't even worthy of the MS69.

Thanks John Maben for your repsonses.
I believe in an earlier post you disputed the reality of a "true 70" as you have yet to find a "perfect" coin with your years of grading experience.
So, that may be what HSN buyers are seeking....an experience. Good or bad. Best or better or just slightly worse.
