Registered Mail vs. Express Mail

Looking for help, thinking about sending a batch of coins using Express Mail, and I've never done it before. Value is about 5K. Looking for pros/cons of each including price, security, delivery time, etc. Thanks in advance for the help.

Security: Use Registered. The mail will be kept under lock and key the entire time.
Delivery time: Express mail. Only takes 24 hours, whereas Registered can take a few weeks or more.
Price: With insurance, they will run you about the same.

I always use USPS Registered/Insured for any value over $500. Takes longer, but I have never had a loss.

I have sent items registered priority mail before. I wonder if USPS will allow registered express mail....

Registered Mail is the safest way you can ship anything of value given the package is placed under lock and key the entire time it is enroute to it's destination. There is also a log created for the shipment and everytime the package is handled by a postal employee it must be signed for. Insurance coverage is available up to $25,000 against loss or damage. Tranist time can take around one week or more.

Express Mail is the fastest way to ship an item with guaranteed delivery in 1 or 2 days though not as secure as Registered Mail. Insurance is available up to $5,000.

About a year ago I remember a huge thread about PCGS sending some submissions from a show back to PCGS using express mail. The package was lost in transit.

PCGS sent the coins home using Express Mail. The coins got lost and I don't know what the final outcome was.

Doesn't matter what service level you pick; everything registered goes the same.

If speed is important and you don't care [or even hope it gets lost] about security use Express Mail.

I do almost everything via express mail but I have dealers insurance which covers express mail BOXES to 25K. For individual coins which are valued at more than 25K and depending on the state that the package is coming in from or going to , either a ryder or reg mail is the option.

That's for domestic shipping.

Anything of value always goes Registered. I'm nice to the PO employees so my packages get to the Left coast from the East coast in only 3 days.

Not all express mail is one day. It's two days from my neck of the woods.

REGISTERED/PRIORITY is the way to go in my opinion.

Registered mail insurance claims guarantees against THEFT. Priority supposedly gets it there quicker.

Cost is no where near the same between reg mail and express mail with the same insurance rate. Express mail is much more expensive.

Reg mail is not a two week process (although it can be) Normally it takes 2-3 days longer than first class.

If you have insurance, does it really matter????

If the coins are over $500, I always use registered. It might be slower, but safer.

As a result of the security of Registered Mail, the Insurance is much cheaper than other types of mailing. Mike

If you would rather have the coins than a 2 month or more insurance settlement use registered.

If shipping My coins to PCGS I use priority, insured. If to someone I sold to over $1000.00 I use registered,insured....Last shipment sat to PCGS, Plat set not in "system" yet, so may be rethinking to go all reg. from now on.
