IF you purchased a few $20 double liberty's from an estate after a death in the family and IF they were all MS grades in the old green holders and IF you had reason to believe they had never been sent out for regrade and IF you do not know enough about grading yourself to know if they would upgrade or not would you send them in or just keep them as they are?

    If I were keeping them, I would leave them as is. Frankly, if I were going to sell them, I would also leave them as is. I guess under any circumstance, I would leave them as is.

    I certainly would not send them in if I didn't think they had a great chance of upgrading or if I didn't know. Personally I think it is prudent to own some MS gold double eagles because I believe inflation will increase from here supporting the price of gold and scarce collectables. You can learn more about grading in the meantime. You can go to some shows and compare your coins to similar dates/grades which might help you form an opinion. When you do sell it is wise to get the coin in the proper holder so if you aren't sure at that time you should get the advice of a trusted person who knows how to grade double libs and then you can decide if you want to spend dough on grading. Personally I like properly graded coins in green label holders.

    Post some pic and if they can upgrade then you can make a intelligent decision! and just send them in with a min Grade.

    Unless i thought they could double upgrade, I would leave them as is and sell as premium for grade w/ upgrade potential (if I honestly thought they were)

    I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

    Also depends what the current grades are, what date they are, and what the price spread is for the next grade up. IF they are common date MS61's upgrading to MS62, then it's not worth it. If they are better date 64's with a shot at 65, send 'em in and send them to auction. If they're something in between, then peruse all the advice given here from everyone and decide what works best for you.

    Good advice above,

    If I plan to keep, then Id keep them intact in OGH.

    If planning to sell, I would only crack them if the upgrade(upside potential) is worthy of the potential upgrade and was a better than a 75% shot at catching it. if you dont have the ability, then you might consider asking a few folks who do, that would give you thier honest opinion, not ones that were just looking to score a potential upgrade themselves????

    If the upgrade is a smaller percentage $ amount, or only a possible chance of upgrading, lots of times the perception might sell it for PQ or stronger money anyway!

    Untouched OGH's are a crap shoot. Many of these coins are stained and spotted. If you have rattlers even better though. But the ogh's seem to be all over the map on quality. You won't find that many gold dogs. Would not do anything with them until a trusted expert looks at them. Common $20 Libs don't have big spreads until you reach MS64 grade. If they don't look real clean and blazing to start with, they probably are nothing special. And if still in the ogh's they have not been sent back and looked at.
