Crossover Strategy?

In crossing a coin from NGC to PCGS, is it a better strategy to ask for the grade you want or simply mark "ANY" as the desired grade? I have a Cal Gold coin grade MS 66 PL in an NGC holder. IMO it's a solid 66 coin, but I do know that NGC has a history in this series of grading coins at the MS level slightly higher - a point above. I do not want to crossover at a 65, so what's my best strategy on submitting - ask for the 66 or leave it it up tp PCGS, or ??? Is there a downside to asking for the specific grade? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Since you don't want less than a 66 I would say you only want it to cross at the same, not any grade. You run the risk of a DNC which will cost you some $$$, but at least you'll know.

    Positive BST transactions with: too many names to list! 36 at last count.

    sounds to me like your best strat is to leave it in ngc at 66 as demanding 66 out of pcgs may not be your best strat
    everything in life is but merely on loan to us by our appreciation....lose your appreciation and see

    This is the way it works:

    When you specify "any" as a crossover grade, PCGS will simply pop the coin out of the NGC holder and grade it. The grade it gets is the grade it gets.

    When you specify "MS66" as the minimum crossover grade, PCGS will only pop the coin from the NGC holder if they feel it would grade at least an MS66. If there are "hidden" problems on the edges though, your coin could get bagged. They really try their best to insure that your coin will grade at your specified minimum.

    If you think the coin is a solid 66, then send it in and specify MS66 as the minimum crossover grade. If it makes it then great, if it doesn't, then at least you still have it in the NGC MS66 holder.

    Edited to add: There should not be a crossover strategy. The coin is either a solid MS66 regardless of whose slab its in or its a slider MS66 that may or may not make the grade.

    BTW, crossovers do not have minimum submission levels.
    I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    It's a crap shoot on crossovers from NGC to PCGS in my opinion.

    ...then put 66 as a min grade and hope for the best!

    People waste their time by worrying about crossover strategies. The coin will get the PCGS grade it deserves. It will then be more marketable than the same coin in another TPG's holder, maybe even if the grade is lower. It is the reality of today's coin marketplace.

    That's a brutal response 291......image I actually don't waste my time and thought it was a legitmate question. PCGS grades tight on th FG as opposed to NGC, and I have successully crossed some 66's, but also had some cross at 65 - Not unexpectedly. But that's OK with an R7 coin. With this particular piece the 66 grade and condition rarity matter $$$$ wise. I think the best approach is to go for the minimum grade of 66 the C note and hope that my grading opinion and PCGS' are in line.. and someone can use a few extra bucks.. image

    Depending on the value of the coin, one might specify 66 and pay the $20 for the PCGS grade and statement (available after Jan 14 submissions). Then it will go 66 or you will know the grade they will cross at. If it is, say, 65PL and you are happy with it, another submission (and fee) with that specified should get it. Games can make sense for coins of value >> the submisison fee.

    It is a legitimate question. The coin market is changing and the marketability of certain TPG's is changing as well. In my opinion, the number 2 TPG's reputation has been sliding slowly but surely since the late 1980's. There was a time when that TPG had a reputation that was better than the current number 1 TPG. So far as the number 3 and number 4 TPG's go my feeling is that they are approaching irrelevance. I don't like this situation at all, but that is how I see it. I'm not big on "happy talk."

    Additionally, Cal Gold presents itself (IMO) much better in a PCGS holder. In this particular instance a client is building a collection housed only in PCGS holders, hence my desire to cross this coin at the same grade
