Is it time for the AU-58 grade to be expanded?

From what I have seen, this grade seems to have the biggest range of coin condition
and some coins have big value differences from AU-55 to AU-58 to MS-60

rather then change something that works perfectly fine, ie grading scale, why not change GRADERS instead? if they would grade right, then the 70 point scales works great

Doubtful. The reason most are [IMO] is because they want to buy something the market values at 62 for less.
<< <i>I have to wonder: if the price guides valued AU58 the same as MS62, would collectors be so up in arms about pieces with cabinet friction being in 62 holders?
I'm only "up in arms" about AU coins being put in MS holders. The market will value them however it wants; I've certainly purchased more than my share of slabbed AU-58 coins for MS money. I'm totally cool with such an AU being assigned the 62 number. I just don't like that they are called MS when they have obvious rub.

There's a huge difference between an AU-58 that is an ugly unc with too much rub
and an AU-58 that is a suberb gem with light wear.
Some will prefer the former but most will prefer the latter.

Agreed. And the latter should *either* be slabbed as a technical 58 that sells for 63 money *or* be slabbed as an AU-63. Either is fine with me. It should NOT, IMO, be slabbed as MS-63.

What is the difference between "light wear" and "rub"??
I always thought they were the same and both belonged in a au58 holder.

Actually, you could say that about any grade.
Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

the graders/dealers are to blame for this current situation and the
brainwashing of collectors to go along with it.
the market can decide what each coin is worth (tomb's thoughts).
