Houston We Have A Problem and NJ Snow 2 Reports For the Price of 1

Here is a bit of a show report ....
Started out on Thursday heading from NY to Houston.... started out early am Thur and could not believe my luck.....
first no traffic, no wait at the check in, no problem getting past security.... in fact by the time I was at the gate I was an hour early....
Good thing I had a good book, anyway my luck changes as the plane posts a 2 hour delay...thats life.....
off to Houston, after the $47.50 taxi ride ($55 with tip) its to the show.... better late than never arriving around 4:30 pm
hmmmmm why is it so dark???? seems someone forgot to pay for some oil to light up the tables
thats ok, seems that the bourse was half empty... maybe half full if you want to look at the bright side (or dark side)
no worries, interesting enough the first dealers I run into are all from Beantown..... why there is JJ Teaparty, Mikes Coins, etc....
hey arent they supposed to be up at the BayState Show? no fair, from the dealers who did attend Baystate I heard it was quite slow with lot of people looking but not a lot of people buying?
Got set up and started the rounds..... notice a lot of interesting material on the floor, lots of Morgans, Gold, not much in the way of copper
Lots and Lots of Bust 1/2's ... guess they like them.....
around 6:15 the cattle bell rings and dealers enjoy a downhoe Texas Barbaque... nice touch.....
off for a good nights rest, and ready to roll Fri.... (of course about 15 dealers hit the Heritage Auction for round 1)
Friday was a nice day... traffic on the floor steady.... The Good Parts (HITS) lot of very interesting items offered to us, errors, hobo nickels, gold, bust, odds and ends...
nice big bourse (maybe too big) Post office on site, Heritage Auction, Major grading Services there with on site grading)
The Bad.... Bathroom(s) located out the bourse and down a flight of stairs, Food (expensive/with very little selection), no collector turnout Sat afternoon maybe 50 people on the floor..... no turnout, dealers leave.... by Sat afternoon it was ghost town....
Sun, we had returned to NY and headed out to 1 of the 2 big Sunday shows in the area... Parsippany NJ, sad to say it was snowing and about 1/3 of the dealers made the smarter choice to stay home..... I would say about 1/2 the normal crowd also did not show..... for those who did brave the weather there was some interesting items on the floor, we saw interesting Franklin Mint Sets being offered at melt, some nice rare early dollars, wide selection of normal "stuff" really something for everybody.... the day flew and we did see a few of the forum members who braved the 1 inch of snow.... (to get a piece of candy from our candy basket)
The other show was the usual 90-100 table Albany show which is another very busy show held in upstate NY...... til we meet again.... signing out!

Nice to see you in Houston. I think The show was run very well, and having a Heritage auction, PCGS and NGC doing on site grading and a very spacious hall with easy access, it should have been a home run. However, being 1 week after the Pasadena, TX show and not in the usual January time period may have contributed to the lack of public (if that is really the case, I can't say for sure if the public was weak, since I wasn't set up). Carl does a great job and I think he can get the public to these shows. This has all the elements of being the Long Beach or Baltimore of Texas. Give it time, I think.
This was my first time at the Houston show as it is usually is conflicting with the Tucson show.
One of them was a solidly graded 1914-D cent in F-15 grade in an old PCGS holder as well as many other coins in old PCGS holders but were not on my want list.
Yesterday, raking the final of our leaves, today shoveling the snow off our driveway. Did not want to chance driving to NJ.
