Stickers On Slabs!

I Don't want to sound like Andy Rooney, but has anyone noticed all the different kinds of Stickers people Put on Their Slabs? Why is That? They seem to always Put them On The Reverse of The Slab and Usually right on top of the TPG company Logo! Would'nt it be nicer to put them down Lower on The holder in either corner if They MUST be used at All? This year has been the worst I've seen soo far! I've had more then my fair share of PCGS Logo's destroyed by these Pesky little Stickers! I even had to send about 9 or Soo 2006 ASE First Strike Anniversaries BACK to PCGS for re-holdering and one of them was a Rev.Proof 70! It cost me alot of Money and Time as well. It seems to Me,(and i could be wrong), that The PCGS Logo's on the Newer Holders are much more Fragile and Prone to this then the Older Holders? Maybe PCGS should Take a "LOOK" into this and see Why the Newer Logo's are soo fragile and Maybe Go Back to the Older Style? Maybe folks should not put any stickers right on the Logo's? I'd just like to know if this has caused any of you other folks any concerns? It sure irritates me. I'd like to know what you all Think about this. It will be interesting to see the different responses. Ray in Florida

Do you collect coins, slabs or logos?

Why does the First reply seem sarcastic? The Slab is the way the coins i'm referring to are presented. Would You pay full price for a new car if it had been "Keyed" along both sides and just say, oh that's ok? If the coins are Slabbed already,Then that's the way it is. I personally don't like nasty looking, scratched up holders and i don't think most people would like them if they were given a choice. I never implied that these cosmetic distractions in any way effected the "Value" of the coin inside the Slab, but merely pointed out what a pain in the butt it is to have to send coins back and pay all the shipping, insurance plus Reholder Fees for no reason if people would only be more careful. Sure you can keep the mutilated holders if you're ok with that.Everyone has their own point of view and that's what makes it interesting. You asked me if i collect Coins, Slabs or Logo's. I know you were being sarcastic but i'm not sure why? If that's the way you feel, then i guess you feel that all slabs should be done away with and have no place in the Numismatic World?? As I stated earlier, To each his own. My original question was to see if others have the same experience with these added on Stickers, scotch Tape or anything like that, and if soo what their feelings were about it. You choose to answer a question with a question. Thank you for your Reply, Ray

Nope but I wouldn't buy a coin that had been keyed either. I would however buy a nice coin in a slab if the slab had been keyed.

Recognizing that there are all kinds of dealers, it would be great if *all* dealers recognized that the slabs they sell will be placed in a collection and that their customers don't regard the coins as just another commodity transaction.

Messing up the appearance of the slabs that they sell is a subtle (or not so subtle) form of disrespect, in my opinion - and I agree with the OP.

The older NGC slabs with the large holograms were a problem in regards to removing a sticker and having the whole hologram come off with the sticker. If you soak the sticker with Goo-gone, the sticker will comeoff without damaging the hologram.

Take a chill pill man. Don't get your panties in a bunch because the item you bought has a scratch in it's box/packaging. If the item itself is fine then what's the problem ya know.

    Hey Ray -

I'm going to take a wild guess that you were the one that just won my 68RD 1995 DDO on eBay. Matter o' fact...I just dropped off your coin at the PO and, unfortunately, it has three of those small stickers on it still. One with the eBay auction #, one with the grade, and one that I just stuck on there to make it a trifecta! image

I'm only kidding. It's a brand new slab in perfect condition because I had sent it in for TrueView and re-holder not long ago. Enjoy the coin and thanks for the prompt payment.

    Regards,

    Toby

P.S. I'm with you 100% on the stickers...those things drive me absolutely nuts.

I don't really notice stickers on slabs, and I don't even try to remove them. I suppose part of that reaction is my view that the slabs are a temporary housing until I stumble on a way to store and show the coins more to my liking. That said, many collectors like to keep and to display coins in their TPG holders, and it would be nice if dealers were to recognize that fact by taking care to keep slabs in good condition.

The goo left on them can be sort of annoying, but I have a few slabs with dealer's stickers on them. Helps me remember who I bought it from, how much it was and when I bought it. I have all that in an Excel sheet too, but I don't mind it on the back of the slab. As long as it's not covering any part of the coin...no big deal.

I totally understand (and agree with) your frustration, Ray. For internal purposes, we always sticker our coins (it's a necessity for most dealers). When we ship coins, we replace the pricing sticker with our company sticker that gives our name, website, and phone number. It is admittedly a marketing effort, and it does work. Many collectors do leave the stickers on the coins, and we'll then hear from those collectors (or their family members) years later when they are looking to sell their coins, because our stickers are right there on the coins.

But for the collectors who do take the stickers off, I can completely understand their annoyance at seeing half the hologram come off with the sticker. You may be buying the coin, but the holder is part of the package, and it detracts somewhat from the overall presentation if there is an obvious and obnoxious flaw with the holder (scratched slab, peeled off hologram, sticker residue, etc.). Keep in mind, for older holders, there's a good chance the hologram got torn off a long time ago. When we add older holder coins to our inventory, if the hologram is intact, we make a concerted effort to put our stickers below the hologram (we'll slip up from time to time, but we're usually good about this).

I have raw coins and slabbed coins in my collection. I, like most, buy the coin because of the coin itself. But if something is wrong with the holder, I'll get it reholdered.

Hey Again Toby, I just wanted to share something i find interesting. In 1995, I Cherry Picked 47 of the Lincoln DDO's in one day here in South Florida From Rolls i got from Banks and Supermarkets. I sent them All in To PCGS and Most All were Graded MS66, with a Few 65's. These were old Green Holders. The point i'm trying to Make is I did'nt see one coming back at that time in MS67 and forget about 68! I wonder if There were any Green Holder 67's or 68's? I Still have most of them in the Old Green PCGS Boxes and would love to send them in for Regrade but the coin Value still would not make it worth it. I just Submitted one of My PCGS 1909-SVDB MS65RB For regrade because i think it has a good shot and the upside is definitely worth it! Thanks again, Ray..

You can use any vegetable oil and a soft rag to remove labels and label residue. Its Cheap and works. Just wipe off after with a water wet rag and or a dry rag.

I find stickers annoying on slabs BECAUSE I buy the coin. A beautiful coin in a holder with someone's sloppy, handwritten label on it that won't come off without a lot of residue to me (my opinion) is not attractive. To me, the slab is part of the overall presentation of the coin, if it is slabbed.

Sticker damage to TPG labels is an annoying reality. As PerryHall mentioned, this was particularly so with the old NGC slabs.

I'll never buy a slabbed coin from DLRC again.
If they can't keep track of their inventory without destroying the TPGs' sticker that's a problem for them not me.

Yeah the stickers on slabs are a pain especially if the adhesive is really sticky. Goo-Gone takes it off...I will have to try the vegetable oil and see if that works. But having a sticker on the slab would not prevent me from buying something!

    I've used rubbing alcohol, too.

    But Goo-Gone probably works better.

I use 3/8 by 5/8 inch stickers on all my slabs, but only the stickers that are labeled "Removable".

Stickers placed on the old fat NGC holograms were deadly. The rest of the slab holograms were not nearly so vulnerable to sticker shock.

I also won a few coins from David Lawrence. For some reason their stickers rip the holograms worse than anything else I have experienced. I complained to David Lawrence, then just included their coins in my next reholder shipment. That was cheaper for me than shipping to David Lawrence and letting them handle the reholder. One would think by now DL would change their sticker adhesive.image

You said it better than I did mozin . Phooey on those DLRC slabs with the stickers that, when removed, detract from the appearance of the holder.
