Home Trading Cards & Memorabilia Forum

I'm thinking about starting an Ebayer and dealer review website.

This could take many forms, but the basic idea would be to post graded results of raw cards purchased from Ebay, critique return policies, explain any hassles with sellers, etc. A secondary purpose would be to review dealers, shops, etc. that collectors buy from.

Any thoughts?

  • I think the principle is astounding, but it would require a LOT of time and effort and I think you'll find that most people will only share negative info, rather than positive.

It could work. I don't think you can make it profitable though if that's what you're trying to do.

I don't think I'd go for profitability, just set it up as a consumer website where people can post their experiences with Ebay sellers and/or dealers.

Obviously there needs to be something other than Ebay feedback to provide insight on what sellers out there are really like.

  • I think it is a great idea. Why not make it an official thread here? It would not be as neatly put together in terms of organization of your data points but certainly, if nothing else, we could have a list of the ebayers who sell the most trimmed cards or who trypically "overgrade" in their descriptions.

  • excellent idea, ron. i've actually already done some of that work...collecting in an excel file my negative experiences with ebay sellers...as well as collecting, from these boards, other negative experiences with sellers. I would be happy to provide this information if you get the site going.

I remember this idea was brought up awhile ago....maybe not an actual website, but more like a thread. there was some resistance...mainly because people were concerned that PSA would shut the thread down because of liability issues.

I do remember finding a website that tracked bad ebay auctions...outing reprints, trimmed cards and the like. I wish I bookmarked it. Maybe someone here remembers it.

It would have to be a sortable website, not just a thread here, to be useful.

  • Could make it profitable if you use ad's from google for example. If the site where to catch on who knows... I'm sure the youtube kids never thought they would make it rich creating a site that allows you to post multimedia files.

Check out the above link which is a popular website to report spammer phone and fax numbers. Might work for this - say...type in a dealer name and up pops the customer comments.

It would be nice to have it on another website due to the tendency of this site to delete threads critical of it's authorized dealers. I think there would need to be some sort of system that a dealer could respond to criticism of them and ways to offer proof if someone did have an axe to grind so to speak.

    Could be a good idea.

Maybe it should be set up like the Rate your teacher/professor websites.

That way after you leave the obligatory "Thanks" positive feedback on Ebay you could use that id to leave your real feedback anonymously on your website.

I think you'll probably end up with cash from Ebay to shut down image Living the American dream.

I think it would get a bit redundant considering the percentage of overgraded raw cards on ebay is so high. There are good finds, but IME these usually come from random sellers who rarely dabble in cards. When I've bookmarked these sellers' auctions, they've rarely offered high grade cards again; it's almost always been a one shot deal. I've tried the regular sellers that have been recommended on these boards and, other than aarons and nearmint, everybody else overgraded too much for my liking.

I think for the rating system for baseball card dealers we could use "weasels" - all baseball card dealers start with a 1 weasel rating because they are all weasels to some degree, and the more negative comments they get, then the higher the weasel rating.
