You know all those ebay found in ...well sometimes they might be true- new standing liberty quarter

Bid on this lot on a hunch - (well I did email the seller and they told me they could read the dates on two= 1919 and 1920) knowing the 1919 had a little more value than possibly the others I entered an appropriate bid (also I could see pretty good detail on one in photo, but even though I blew it up couldn't make out any more dates- but they didn't look to have recessed dates either!). Here's a link to auction Here's the coins I recieved today:

Of course I immediately set out looking for the 1919, found it:

image

A weak date as usual, but all four digits visible- I got my money's worth for what I paid I guess, now to find the shiny one with detail:

image

1923! - could be there be an "S"- not that lucky. But better than what I was expecting - something like maybe a 1929/1930!

Found two dateless next- one a D mint, the only mint marked coin inlot image or well...*UPDATE* After a little cleaning it looks like the D mint coin is in fact a 1917 type2 - can just make out the slant of the last 7. The other coin has a very weak 8, so it must be a 1918. Looks like it took just 7 or 8 years then for the dates to wear off these coins! -No wonder they are so hard to find.

image

Just one of two 1924's, both with good detail but with obvious problems.

And then the woa coin of the lot....

image

A full 4 digit date 1921 ! If you know the series the 21 is a tough year. I just bought an upgrade to my set last weekend, but this one has it beat.

The other dated coins ended up being a 1917 type2- just the last "7" visible, 2 weak date 1920's and a single date 1918 (mainly just last digit visible). Someone must have put or dropped the coins there around 1924/1925. Probably my best score off of ebay for just under $40 with shipping and insurance. How'd I do?

Nice score indeed! I just sold a nice VF full date 21P during lunch today for $525, and the guy was thrilled to buy it at that price. And yes, I paid WELL over $40 for it....

They had crud that was unsightly to say the least. Did you use acetone? Something stronger?

I guess the SLQ and WLH are my two favorites in 20th century dated coins. Thanks for sharing, and you did REALLY GOOD!image

I started with acetone, I think some of the crud might have been old paint or something, it lifted off easy. But there were some stubborn spots- so I broke out the ezest and a q-tip or two, it made a big difference on the 21,23 and 24 shown.
  • congrats ! good for you, see, getting rid of that phony love token may have helped your game ahhhaha
