A gentleman came into our office with some questions about it and I shared my opinion. I believe he's pretty confident about what I told him, but I think he still may have some doubts. I told him that I could image it and post it so that other could weigh in and then I'd send him the link to the thread. Bust half experts, please share your thoughts. Thank you.

First thought Tassa is an altered date?

Does this coin have a lettered edge?

I think that is the rare, rumored-to-exist-but-never-been-proven 1837 Type II bust half, pedigreed to the Rothschild Collection and worth in excess of $100,000. I am sure that is what you told him, too. Hope this helps.

That does not look to be the correct obverse design for a 37 at all.
I would really take a close look at that date for an alteration Tassa.

It is a contemporary counterfeit, Davignon 2-B (common)

Not my series, but my reference picture shows it should have a different 3, not rounded at the top.

Okay, at the risk of offending a bust half enthusiast and perhaps revealing my ignorance, that thing looks like a beat up piece of crap that I would not spend three seconds trying to figure out what it was.

It's a contemporary counterfeit and can be found in Keith Davignon's book titled Contemporary Counterfeit Capped Bust Half Dollars. It is the 2B combination and considered common. An image can be found on page 145 of the first edition of the book.

I agree with the other respondents - - undoubtably a counterfeit. Still has value, as there are many collectors of contemporary counterfeit bust halves.

What type of value do the contemp counterfeits have? Are they largely dependent on condition, or do beat up pieces of crap still command a nice price?

Most pieces were issued by the counterfeiter to look as though they had been heavily used in commerce already so as to not raise the suspicions of merchants. Therefore, there really are no pristine contemporary counterfeits.
