Sheet of 1877 Indian Head Cent Stamps
A friend showed me these this weekend and thought they were neat. Think he said they were from 1978, so they aren't real old, anyone know the history behind them? Did they make stamps of several coin series, or just the IH? Anyone remember if they were popular among coin collectors. Just curious as to their story.

<< <i>I don't know anything about them, but acquired a couple sheets a coinshow a few years ago and have been using them on coin club newsletters all the time. They were real convenient when the price to mail a letter was 39c. >>
We'll be up to 52 cents soon enough.

I knew I saw these stamps somewhere - I thought maybe there was a post on it before, and spent about 20 minutes looking back through stamp posts, and just realized it was your avatar - guess that's where I remember it from.
I just thought it was neat - as someone mentioned above, might make a neat frame for a coin room.
Someone sent me an eBay win with like $3.50 postage on it a few months back the guy used all 2,3,10,15, etc stamps on it. It had a small return label, my address about 1-inch square, and the entire front of the envelope was old stamps. Believe it or not, these types of stamps usually go under face value at local auctions. They often sell like $100 face in 30-40-50 year old stamps for 60% or so of face. I would have a hard time using that much postage the rest of my lifetime with all the electronic things nowadays.
Thanks for the info all. Now I need to go find if those Coin Ball Cards came out yet

Jeff, I know I still owe you some stuff to top off that still-unshipped trade... would you like some old commemorative stamps that you can use as postage? I don't know if I have any more of the Indian cent stamps or not, but I used to have a wide mix of old commem stamps and plate blocks (mint, never used) that I used to dress up my envelopes with. I bought them from a stamp dealer for less than face. Some of them were as old as 1935- there was a whole sheet of 1939 World's Fair stamps. Not sure what I have left in those old 3c stamps but I might still have some 4c, 6c, 13c, 22c, etc. The reason I got them for less than face value was that some of the older ones, though unused, no longer have very good gum (adhesive) on the backs, so they have to be affixed to the envelopes with a glue stick. Still, they're fun to use. I have had some folks flip when they bought coins from me and got a 1935 Boulder Dam or 1939 World's Fair stamp on the envelope. I guess it's the philatelic equivalent of deliberately spending wheaties or no-date Buffalo nickels.
Edit: I see from the quote above that you're familiar with the way some folks use old stamps.

Of course I don't remember how many I have left- probably not too many. I bought one of those $100 face deals you mentioned and actually did manage to use most of the stamps. It's fun to cover somebody's envelope with vintage stamps, but time-consuming.
