How do you deal with 0 feedback bidders?

I have a bidder with no feedback asking what would be the best way to pay me. Do I block, ignore, delete any bids or tell the person not to bid, etc?

  • If you want to sell the item, tell him your preffered method of payment.

Give him a chance. It looks like he is serious about paying for the item. Don't forget, you started at 0 too.

  • I request a credit check.

All kidding aside, it depends on the item. If it is a high priced item, find out where they are located. It could be a credible bidder starting a new account. It could also be a kid borrowing mommy or daddys credit cards, or an overseas scammer. You don't want to deter any good prospects, but you also don't want to be taken...

Gut feeling is if they are asking you what the best way is to pay, red flags are going up...
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

I remember the very first item I bought on Ebay the seller had to "walk" me through the process of setting up a paypal account... Everyone started at 0...

<< <i>Do I block, ignore, delete any bids or tell the person not to bid, etc? >>

the second Item I tried to buy the seller blocked me because I only had 1 feedback.... Well I have now blocked that seller....

I agree with both answers. Tell them how you want them to pay....and if you only accept one method, e.g. money order or Paypal then tell them that. If they then balk at paying your way then I would tell them to bid elsewhere. ditto on us all starting at 0!!

i would tend to think the opposite, if he is asking, he wants to pay.

Answer the guy's question and let him pay.

When I sell I don't even look at the buyer's feedback. I take the money and send with tracking. If high dollar (everybody different on that) I do signature guarantee or some more elaborate "proof" that they received item. If he sends a personal check you might hold off mailing for a couple weeks! image
  • when i have zero feedback bidders, i send a polite email asking for their shipping/contact info (they would be providing that anyway if they won the item) Heck ill even do that to questionable bidders (on big ticket items) you know the ones, no feedback on ebay for years, then suddenly they are bidding on everything and anything.

Sometimes it pays to be cautious. Ill never just cancel them. 99% of the time the write back, ive even had one or two call me to let me know they are legit.

This is an extremely helpful board, but reading too many posts can make one paranoid. Remember, most folks only share the nightmares, not the millions of mundane good transactions.

  • Well, I recently had a bad experience with a 0 feedbacker and ended up leaving negative feedback due to lack of communication and payment. This guy does sound like he is willing to pay though. I say let him bid. We all have to start somewhere. image

I always check to see what a 0 feedback bidder has/is bidding on. If it's a ton of stuff, I tend to think it's somebody monkeying around.

As long as the buyer does his/her/its part, that's what counts and gets them feedback. I don't care what everyone else thinks about not doing that; it's the responsible, moral thing to do. The only reason you wouldn't do that is so you can hold their feedback hostage and have the means to retaliate, which is wrong.
