What on Ebay keeps people from bidding up their own items?

How do they stop that?

morals, business ethics, and compliance with the rules.
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

Do you mean using your sellers account to bid on your own items? At one time ebay did allow for that to go on, but that was many years ago.

IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY
  • Sadly many people do this by letting other people bid on their auctionsimage I have noticed certain sellers doing this. For example theres this seller who also has the pritty high end cards with 10 day auctions and within the first day or two, the item is already like $2,000 or something LOL, then the closing bid like 8 or 9 days after ends at about $2,100! Its not just one time I have seen it from the same seller or others, I have seen it many times, and sadly most of the times, its been on cards i've wantedimage

    plifter,

that motto is always the rule when spending one's money.

But I believe the vast majority of people in the sports card business are honest and legit. I've won over 9,000 auctions on eBay in my years of buying sports cards--and only had 4-5 transactions with any problems. Only one of those "appeared" to be a legit circumstance of being ripped off (item not received)--and even in that case, I can't be 100% sure that the seller did not mail the item and it simply got lost in the mail. The other times, I do believe there were honest mistakes involved and the seller either refunded my money, or sent me replacements.

I've also bought/traded with/received free stuff/sent free stuff to at least 60 posters here at Collector's Universe--and the 2-3 times that things did not go as planned, the matter was resolved to everyone's satisfaction in the end. In my recollection of the years I've been here on these boards, I recall hearing about board members cheating other members probably less than 10 times.

So the "morals, business ethics, and compliance with the rules" does seem to be the case with the vast majority of sports hobby dealers (here and on eBay).

Sure, there are scammer/shillers on eBay--but most are easy to avoid with just a little research (red flags visible with their auctions, feedback, bidding histories, etc.).

I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

The question should be how many more steps will ebay go through to make it even more difficult for us to find shilling ?

Since they started that whole hidden bidder name thing its become more difficult.

As long as the price goes up and ebay gets more money they could not give a damn what goes on.
