...We just had an earthquake here in the Bay Area at 5.6 on the Richter Scale with the epicenter about 9 miles north of San Jose. Post a coin with a die crack.

Or, the Grandaddy of all bisecting cracks, the one that Sheldon himself called "The Bisecting Crack," 1793 S-14 Liberty Cap.
I've only been in two earthquakes, one in Pennsylvania and one in Maryland. I bet dollars to donuts neither of them was anywhere near a 5.6! The one in PA when I was a kid made my glass of milk go from side to side, the one in MD a few years ago made my window shake. Nothing cracked.

I walk to Alum Rock every day. All pictures are slanted. Even though I hadn't added water to my fish tank it splashed water over the floor. Books fell off shelves. Glasses too. Broken glass is on the floor.
I was able to take cover. The eipcenter is 5 miles from my house. It is described as a moderate quake. I was able to take cover. During the '89 Loma Prieta quake I was not able to take cover. I could not walk. More later...
The worst one I've been though here was in 1988. I lived in the Milpitas foothills when a 5.3 centered about two mile east struck in the early morning. I was nearly thrown out of my water bed and awoke to explosions, flashing light, breaking glass and shaking. Then windows where breaking thruout the neighborhood and power transformers were blowing all around. I thought we were being bombed.

Well I didn't feel any aftershocks. I did hear a noise just before the quake. It sounded to me like a train was coming, then it felt like a train hit the house! If you are right on top of a 5+ quake you can feel it pretty strongly. The big quakes are felt more widely.

do you mean your mega cool Oregon comm. is closer to me than I thought? here in Monterey area it was just a wee rumble, my house is on bedrock so it doesn't shake much, yet it was felt for a few seconds.
ps i had one dies crack coin but i sold it
