Dealer Inventory

Seriously where do dealers get there inventory from. This is been posted before. Is there really like a warehouse in the middle of nowhere that you can just buy rolls of coins. I am trying to start to be a dealer but its just not being easy. So any suggestions would be helpful.

Re: Slabbed coins - There are some coins that LIVE within clear plastic and wear their labels with pride... while there are others that HIDE behind scratched plastic and are simply dragged along by a label. Then there are those coins that simply hang out, naked and free image

Depends on the dealer. Some have been around for a long time and have a decent and reliable wholesale source network. Public auctions are a good source for many, though the participation by so many collectors nowadays probably makes it hard to flip a coin to retail for a decent profit. Longer term dealers know where many of the coins they need are, what collectors bought them or what other dealers know. It sure must be tough for a lot of the full-time folks to keep afloat with those stagnant inventories and uncertain valuation momenta.

I try to be a good boy deal with others as I want to be dealt with and every once in a while the coin fairy comes and trades my dirty old $100 bills for bright shiney coins.... been working fine for 40 years.... If I would have know I was going to live so long I would have been a better boy a lot earlier

For some reason, I can find 75% of the PQ coins I bought from dealers on auction websites such as Heritage ...

Others are probably dealer-to-dealer. When a dealer doesn't want/need a coin any more, it's sent to another dealer. At least that's my belief. This is more common for middle-of-the-road coins.

Very rarely do I see a coin I sell to a dealer in the dealer's inventory list for whatever reason.

I am not trying to sound arrogant or vile, but truthfully if you need to ask how to become a coin dealer then it is fairly certain that you are not ready to become a coin dealer at this time. If you really want to become a knowledgeable coin dealer then a great way to learn about the details of the business is to work for or help out a dealer who is established and successful. Don't be afraid to observe and ask intelligent questions.

Dealers buy their coins from many different sources. Estate sales, auctions and purchases from other dealers are by far the most common sources to aquire inventory. There is no "magic warehouse" for coin dealers. It is up to you individually to find viable contacts for your inventory purchases.
