I've concluded that the "Best Offer" option on eBay is pointless for sellers

I currently have a coin on ebay with a Best Offer option. A couple people have given reasonable offers, but most give insulting offers that no one in their right mind would even consider.
Next time if I do it, I'll just use the "amtomatically reject if under XXX" option too.

<< <i>I have done that and get $1 offers from Russ all the time!! >>
At least eBay collected a bigger FVF.
I have also used the "automatically reject offers under $xxx".
What I liked was that I priced a couple of my (modern crap from the mint) items high when they were sliding. I knew it though, which is why I used the best offer choice.
It then gave me some good back and forth negotiations with potential buyers that did result in my changing the price and selling to them (on ebay) at an agreed upon price that was higher than most sellers were getting at the time but still a little lower than what i had initially listed them for.
So, you just have to have a thick skin, items that you know will sell (reasonably well), and give it a try.
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
He just wants to let you know he cares!
IMHO it makes people think that the price you've set is not really what your looking to get, so they offer significantly lower. If you compensate for that by setting the price high, people think your nuts and don't make you an offer.
<< <i>well, people can only give offers three times on any single item. If you put in a auto reject, it stops people from stupid offers, but could shut out people putting in more than three reasonable offers. Recently, I wanted to purchase a coin and put in three "reasonable" offers and after that, I couldn't put in any more. After you reach your max # of offers, there is nothing that can be done except either pay the full BIN price or put in more offers with another user name. In my case, I ended up buying the coin off ebay which saved the seller on fees which he extended to me. >>

I sell with best offer all the time, because I'm too impatient to auction and I love to buy with it myself.
It's discouraging sometimes with ebay buyers, but that's life as a store owner dealing with the public. At least you don't have to deal face-to-face with some of these nuts!
