I'm thinking it has something to do with the round thingy around the Morgan. Some kind of paperweight?

It's struck with a partial collar. I'd bet the reeding is almost nonexistent from about K9 to K4 (looking at the obverse).

Sorry Tom if that gives a deceptive appearance. Your seeing the edges of an Anco coin tube that I used as a pedestal for the shot. Keep trying though

nice display. I have an 1837 half dime (circulated to VF or less) that demonstrates the same railroad rim characteristics. Pretty cool stuff.

The "railroad rim" partial collar strikes have long been recognized as Mint errors, but they are exceedingly rare in all series. One must view hundreds of thousands of coins to find even a few...
