What does recoloring mean

as reffered to with Copper coins? And how do you tell if it has been? Sorry for the basic question...

    When copper has been dipped, it has an unnatural pink color which experienced copper collectors will reject. Recoloring means applying a chemical to tone dipped copper back to a more natural brown color. Deller's Darkener is a commercial recoloring product. Some make their own with petrolium jelly and powdered sulfur. Recolored copper will not fool an experience copper specialist but it does make the copper look more natural.

    Eeek...Guess I better figure out houw to spot one....Anyone want to post a example? A good one next to one thats been recolored for educational purposes? Repaints have done a number on our hobby (Antique Lures) and have discouraged many newer collectors....Every year they get better and better at fooling even those of us who have been around them.....

    I do however see many more posts on this board of run for the hills its a fake, or somethings not right, or look out....Are there that many fakes out there, even on the common items.....I guess since coin collecting has been around 100+ years before wooden lures the scamers got a jump start on it....That and value of high end coins is far and above most lures....A high end lure runs about 5-10K and there are very few players in that area....Most are in the 50-300 range...

    Matt---Stick with top tier slabs and you shouldn't have too much to worry about in regard to fakes and recolored coins. If you buy a lot of raw copper, study as many slabbed NGC, PCGS, or ANACS as possibile to get a feel for what naturally toned copper should look like.

    I have never seen a fake haskell, yet....

    Heres 2 pages I wrote about him...That the Haskell family foundation took and sent out world wide in thier family news letter last year...

    This is the reason I want to collect copper....The history of the world at that time, the common people, etc...I love it
