new to the boards and need some 80's help

Hi there new to the boards and I really need some help on some Mike Schmidt 80's cards. Collected as a kid and when I got older I told my parents to get rid of my cards. Now I want to start collecting again. My question is, is it worth it to buy a psa 9 1980 something Mike Schmidt card on ebay for anywhere between 4 and 12 dollars and pay 3 to 4 dollars shipping. These cards book for a dollar up to 2.50 in nr-mt condition. So when all is said and done I would spend 8 to 15 dollars on a single card. I know that the book value is just pages and ink and people pay what they are willing to pay but do these cards have any room to increase in value or is it just over produced 80's cards. Any feedback would be a big help. Thanks in advance.

It depends on what you want . If you want to replace the cards you had as a kid I would go the raw route. Graded cards are a good thing if you are selling. You can buy every 1980's mainstream issued card for the price of one graded one. Save your money and maybe buy a mid grade rookie. Another point to ponder- Mike was a great player but over the years values of his and many other Hofers such as Nolan Ryan have gone down. I am talking raw values here. No offense to anyone but graded cards are a expensive fad. The authenticity aspect is not overrated imo. I bought a psa 3 pete rose for my collection and freed it from it's plastic coffin so it would fit in my Reds binder.

Welcome to the boards! Good point Mike, i agree. I you just want top replace your cards you can buy raw singles or vending boxes from that era and it will be rather inexpensive. If you go for raw cards you might want to check out sportslots.com. Its a great place to pick up singles for rather cheap and the shipping is less expensive than ebay.

    First off welcome.

I collect PSA superstars and HOF cards mostly from the 1950's through about 1985. After those years, I buy mostly graded rookies or raw singles. PSA 1980's cards are not the greatest investment, but I don't collect for mainly investment purposes. I like the look of the cards in slabs and they are pretty affordable. The best piece of advice I can give if you go the graded route is to buy several graded cards at a time from one seller to save on shipping. I have done that and have received PSA 8 and 9's of superstar players for $3.00-$6.00 a piece depending on the player.

Also, I collect sets from those years, which are very cheap. You may want to think of doing that. The cards look great in binders and pages. When I got back into collecting, I had few sets from my childhood and had to repurchase them. Depending on condition you can get the 1980 set for about $70.00 and the rest of the 80's sets are $40.00 and under. The later 80's sets you can get for $10.00 and under + shipping.

Sportlots is also great. That is where I buy my 80's and 90's superstars and hofers raw for my binder.

Good luck in whatever you decide.

    Welcome!

Hopefully you see this in time, this is a great way to start!
MIKE SCHMIDT PSA CARD LOT ON EBAY

I don't think 1980s Mike Schmidt cards have any room to get valuable, but if you look at the cards as "toys" instead of "stocks" you'll enjoy them a lot more. You could go to McDonald's and buy lunch or you could buy a psa 8 schmidt card. 8s are nice cards with sharp enough corners, they're probably nicer than the ones you had back in the day since none of us really ever opened packs and immediately put the cards in top loaders.

8s of most mainstream schmidt 1980s cards won't cost you a fortune, especially if you either watch ebay stores and try to get a few from the same seller, or you might want to email the guys who are actively working on schmidt player sets, and ask them to think of you when they upgrade.

I prefer graded cards because I like knowing with reasonable certainty that my clemente cards are real and not trimmed. I also like the protection that comes with the slab, and I'll get rough clemente cards graded just so I don't hurt them.

I think if you're going to look at it for investment purposes you go to the 1973 - 1974 and 1975 and buy the nicest graded example you can afford. There's always going to be Schmidt collectors and so if you have a 7 rookie and find an 8 you will be able to find a buyer for your 7. Then later if you find a 9 somebody will want your 8, and you will most likely at least break even for the time you had the card.

  • Welcome, glad you could make it image

    EDITED: sorry, I'm no help.
  • There is most definitely room to increase in value. It's simply highly unlikely

For the absolute cheaper cards, Ebay is not the best place. Buy the card, not the holder. Enough people don't do that to the point that it effects prices (but also remember psa 9 is supposed to be mint, not near mint)

    Welcome Johnny!

You said you wanted to start collecting again - what will be your area of interest?

Do you want to collect all graded or all raw or mixed?

Are you interested in future value of the items you purchase?

Will you be a Schmidt specialist?

    Sets or singles?

Have you established a budget? That's probably the SINGLE most important part of the process unless you're filty rich?

If there's a nice show near you - I would guess you could view these kinds of cards all day long and pick the best ones out for little money.

My guess on the PSA 9 - if you see one with a good scan - the card is well centered - and you like it - and the price is within reason for graded? Then I say go for it. If you buy it raw and submit yourself - you're still gonna have all those costs you're referring to.

Good luck and don't be a stranger. Tie - optional.
