You could fit my house inside that kitchen. Are there really kitchens with chandeliers? I'm hoping that my wife will eventually settle for a gargage disposal and a new toaster.
My wife would argue that decorating and remodeling the home are her hobbies, and she will parade out all of the bovine elmo articles from Money magazine and the like arguing that this adds value to your home, yada yada yada. In the same vein, we say that we are "buying coins for our retirement", and we all know that's a crock.
That is a a seriously nice kitchen RYK has hooked you up with! If I ever get to the North East I'd love to have dinner in a kitchen like that....but I suspect I'm not a welcome guest. That's gonna hurt, which is bad for both of us really since I've got a really nice group of original, higher grade shield nickels coming in next week....they are supposed to have nice, original color as well.
And, since we're piling on here Lou, well, um, I'm assuming you don't know this but your wife has been working on a set of Saints in MS65, which I've been helping her with....guess she's working just as hard to hide invoices from you

Lou--great to hear the kitchen is finally done. On my end, Mrs. L went on a furniture buying spree recently which put a serious dent in my coin budget. When I was out of the country over the past few days, she called a carpet place and had someone come to measure for carpets throughout the house. As soon as I walked in last night, weary from my travels (late flight from Germany, missed connection in London, came thisclose to almost having to sit in coach from London to JFK because of my missed flight, etc.), she tells me that we are not just getting regular, off the shelf carpets. Rather, we are getting custom made carpets because our stairs and hallways are not standard sizes. I never heard of custom carpets before, personally. They must be expensive, because the carpet store owner called the house last night at 9 PM and offered to set up a special appointment tonight for me after hours so he could explain the benefits of custom carpets to me. There goes more of the coin budget.

This was a funny thread and one to which I can easily relate. My wife knows about my coin purchases and generally knows how much I spend. I tell her up front the ball-park figure and we move the conversation on to something else. She is usually supportive - not necessarily enthusiastic, but doesn't threaten divorce either...at least not often.
However, she recently asked me to stop buying coins for the rest of the year...and I agreed. She wants to put a little more into savings, we're talking about going to Hawaii for Christmas, and we may be looking to buy a house in the next six months or so.
It is time to take a break...but I still drive myself nuts looking at cool coins on the Internet and wishing.
I'm not sure if I should be surprised that so many people hide their coin transactions from their wives. You guys don't have joint accounts? You don't discuss purchases openly? You sneak and hide your acquisitions? Can't say I have not done that myself at one time or another but we both know what the other spends, in general, because we pool our money for the family. Am I in the minority here?

For example the first step on the stairs is wider than the next step, etc., as you go higher on the staircase. Then there is a landing and the stairs sweep to the left until you get to the second floor. Also, he said that our hallway is not one width, and it gets slightly narrower as it crosses from one side of the house to the other. Am I getting taken for a ride?

YES. Salesmen love to talk to wives as they are generally much more likely to buy such rubbish. I would get the carpet number you like from him. Send him packing and buy it somewhere else, even if he offers to reduce his price. --Jerry

The carpet it self can be of any style or design . It may take an experienced installer to do your job , which may come with additional labor charges . Any style of carpet that your wife falls in love with can be installed on your stairs , with the exception of some of the commercial carpets . Just remember that 90% of carpet comes 12' wide , your stair configuration may cause you to buy more square yards , as you will wind up with waste .
The Good installer makes all the difference in the world . When I buy carpet for my house I live by one motto " Buy cheap , Replace often" , it only works for me because my wife gets my labor for free !
I own a union carpet installation business in Chicago , If your stair case were real labor intensive I would charge an additional 8 hrs max , but being union installers that works out to $608.00 in extra labor !
608.00 may sound expensive , but believe me it is cheaper than some of the "custom" carpets that are out there . A good friend of mine just did a house with custom wilton carpets ( average cost of 3-4 hundred dollars a square yard) , it took 3 men 3 weeks to install ( @ appx $80 @hour) , total price for the job was just under 300 K !!

My boyfreind and I share the love of collecting so, we both cry if an appliance breaks down and we are forced to replace it instead of fill an empty hole in our books. Granted, he does most of the buying but, that is his money to do with what he wants and he is nice enough to suprise me with a hole filler in my books every so often... even when he could spend it all on his own collection. What a guy huh? I just wish I could suprise him more.

I will toss in my 2 cents worth on the topic of a kitchen remodel. IGWT, your wife wanted a remodeled kitchen and you were concerned about the cost of same.
One way to view this topic when you your wife is "discussing" her desires with you is to look at whether the remodeled kitchen will be producing wonderful meals for you and your family, courtesy of your wife's efforts at cooking.
If your wife is a good cook who likes to prepare meals, the idea of a remodeled kitchen makes practical sense. If, on the other hand your wife does not like to cook or is a lousy cook, then why spend the money on a remodel for something which will be nothing other than "window dressing" when friends and family visit.
You know if your wife can cook or can not cook. Keep that in mind when discussing whether to remodel. Before proceeding with the remodel project, you could have gingerly said to your wife something to the effect of:
1. "Honey, you do not like to cook, so why spend the money on something we would not make full use of"; or
2. "Honey, I am open to a remodel if you would be willing to make use of the new kitchen by cooking family meals; or
3. Our family does not cook very much, so wouldn't a kitchen remodel be nothing more than vanity, if it is rarely used for its intended purpose?
If you had said any of the above statements to your wife, I wonder how things would have turned out for you

In case anyone is interested in the Carpet Saga™, I had a call with the carpet guy this afternoon. Needless to say, I did not get the warm and fuzzies from him, and I think he wants to take me for a ride. I got a little concerned when he said, "rich people know that you can't do what you're proposing on the stairs with standard carpet". That either means one of two things-- somehow he thinks I am rich (I am certainly not) and therefore will pay for the custom carpet, or he thinks I am an idiot because I am asking for something that a chimpanzee would know is not possible. I called another carpet store and will arrange for them to come out and talk to me.
