I'd say you got a pretty good deal. Dealers on tape are paying more than that for 62s.

I'd say you bought fair value. Also realize that there is always a chance the account if hijacked or the seller decides to bail. Even "good" ones sometimes go bad. One good $800 hit can take a long time to make up at $10-$20 per coin. And after ebay fees you will probably lose on the coin. If gold drops by the time you get the coin in a week or two, you could be out $25-$50. So there is no guarantee. I bought a slightly better date $20 Lib in the same grade 2-3 weeks ago for no extra premium (still waiting for the coin). And at this point, I just wish I hadn't bid as the seller is in Canada and was slow to respond to emails. I did feel a little better when I saw that the seller bought the exact same slabbed coin a few months earlier for $30 less. He'll make $20-$30 after holding for several months.

Im checking thier past auctions and all are written up in the same (shoddy) way with allusions to bad pics, misspellings, and never accepts paypal (MO/check only)...

all in all, like a coin seller Id tend to avoid, but at least the auctions are uniform. alternates between selling shoes for $5 and gold coins of varying value, but a low grade saint isn't out of character maybe.

nothing obvious, just not optimal. horse is kinda outta the barn I think, the terms were already disclosed.

That was my thought, no buyer protection, no paypal, no credit cards.
From a buyers point of view paypal would have added some safety.

You didn't get a deal, you paid retail or what you'd expect to pay for that coin in MS62. If the coin is nice for the grade you did ok. However, I wouldn't expect to make money on the flip. You'll probably lose money once you calculate ebay fees. These coins are very common and readily available for slightly over melt. But it's gold and a nice coin to collect. Enjoy it.

Okay...here's the Email I sent him...

    Hello,

I just bought your 1907 Gold $20 Liberty. However, after reviewing your account, I'd have to say that I am a bit apprehensive about sending such a large payment in such an unprotected form. No offense, but your account seems suspicious due to the fact that you haven't sold anything for over a year. In addition, your description was not very, well, descriptive. So I was wondering, Where exactly did you get this coin? Why haven't you sold on Ebay in so long? Also,Could you please provide some additional pictures of your coin? Please Email them to ----------@yahoo.com. If you are unable to do this, I am afraid you will have to send a second chance offer to the second highest bidder (which is only like $10 less than my bid) because I feel uncomfortable with the sale terms. Thanks so much and I'm truly sorry for the hassle and I hope you understand my dilemma!

    -Paul

So I guess if he doesn't respond in a few days I'll just take the strike...I'd much rather do that than lose $800.....

image I guess it is worth a neg., rather than a possible loss. Seller likey just trying to get most he/she can. Mistakes are on the buyer for not "researching" buy before bid. It happens, no big deal.

That all said........the seller will be scratching his head as to why you even bid with all the baggage you mentioned to him.

I would also contact ebay and tell them you are worried that the account might be hijacked. What worries me is that the cert number isn't shown so it might be a stolen photo too. I've had e-bay get back to me and say they talked to the seller and the account isn't hijacked (of course I asked before I bid rather than after). --Jerry

that's an excellent suggestion, any contact from ebay should scare away any hijackers. at least you'll get the merchandise...

the one and only time I sent a MO, I got burned for it. thank god it was only a $40 5-wood image

The cert # not being shown is a big neg for me too. At least ask him for another pic showing the full slab.

When you use ebay's NGC interface to enter the coin number, the information gets auto filled with the grade only. Unless you go back and edit it, no one will no what you are selling from the title alone.

Why did you bid on this guy's coin if you have no intention of paying? Can I have your Ebay ID so that I can block you?

I'd just be square with the seller and say you noticed it was a long time between sales and with all the highjacked accounts you'd like there phone number to call the seller. If they provide it your more than likely ok. Call him.

Good suggestion too. Now be patient. The seller may invoice you and you can then e-mail him back. Ask for a phone number. It is usually pretty easy to tell a hijacker on the phone. I've had only one instance in years where I talked to the guy on the phone and hung up and still didn't know if he was a crook or not. --Jerry

I think you are being way too rash...i don't just go around bidding on lots and deciding not to buy...this is the first time I've done this...I always pay VERY FAST but if you were in my situation, I don't think you'd be risking your $800 on what could very well be a hijacked account. So please don't be making hasty generalizations...If you want to block me because of one mistake, block me, I wouldn't want to buy from you anyways.

Starts a post here only seven minutes after the auction closes with a title screaming of a killer ebay snipe, all proud, chest all puffed out, then quickly gets cold feet checking out the seller and his history and further details only AFTER placing a bid, then wants to back out of the deal and get support from those here.

I guess you don't need another person reminding you that you should have done your homework before bidding, but if this account turns out to be legitimate, my opinion is you need to honor your bid and not slime out of your commitment.

    This is my favorite quote:

    << <i>....His feedback doesn't look that bad... >>

Oh no. Only thirteen negatives in barely a thousand transactions. A real solid seller. image

I just said that I'd do exactly that. And I was planning on going through with the sale until I posted here. I wasn't going to think twice about it, but then many of you expressed your concerns, which made me nervous, because you guys usually know what you're talking about....So don't go saying that I backed out on this sale by myself, because many of you guys told me not to go through with it and I am not paying until I find out for sure if he's legit or not...

'Morning kid. I didn't say you backed out on the sale. I suggested you don't back out, in my opinion, if the account is on the up and up. Of course that can all change if the seller or his account turns out to be suspect. Hey, I've bid on stuff too without checking payment options, or reading every single word written in their diatribe, but not hundreds...

Why believe what other people say? If you don't want to pay because of some perceived misrepresentation, then don't bid on eBay. There are many fine people here who would be willing to sell you a 1907 NGC MS62 $20 Liberty.

If I had a PCGS/NGC $20 Gold Liberty on eBay, would you bid on my item if you didn't know my eBay Id? I only sell coins roughly a few times every year. My feedback is under 100, mostly from buying items, not selling items. I only like checks and money orders. Or would you prefer to purchase from a reputable dealer?

I'm going to be cynical. We are not your parents. We are not parties to the transaction. In the end, we will not care whether you got your item, did not pay, or whatever may result from this transaction. Whatever decision you make is yours alone, not any part of the group here. In other words, in this case learn to think for yourself and no matter the outcome, take it as a lesson learned.

If you donot have the $ .why did you bid? hello you should check feed back 1st. I also sold 8 other ozs that day MR. bad marks against you fello

He didn't answer any of my questions or provide any pictures of the entire slab.....Apparently he doesn't have a spell check either.

So, what do you guys think now?

Did eBay respond? Is the account solid? Ask fewer questions. Ask one or two very simple ones and see if he responds to those.
